In an interview with USA Weekend, King, who’s sold around 350 million books, compared the Paradise Valley author to “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling:

“Both Rowling and Meyer, they’re speaking directly to young people. … The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can’t write worth a darn. She’s not very good.”"

I love this man. Yes, he's got over 50 books so some of them aren't that great, but he's probably America's most famous craftsman and wrote Dead Zone and The Stand which are two of the greatest American novels ever written in my opinion.

Screw Twilight.

Are the book covers the same in England? In America they are: (1) a girl holding an apple in front of her crotch (2) a blooming orchid in profile (3) a curving red ribbon and (4) a white king chess piece standing erect in the middle of the cover with a small red queen piece in the far background.

I mean, honestly, at least give the young girls a money shot.

This article was taken out of context. Of course all of the Twilight lovers and haters focus just on Meyer, but it was more than that. He was just saying that he thinks you can get away with being a God-awful writer if you are speaking to your audience. He was honest in his critiques. He even criticized Dean Koontz and and James Patterson as well.  King has been there and done that, so his opinion matters to me. But honestly, when was the last time you heard from King? 1408? It's a shame that he has to say something "controversial" about God's gift to man (Twilight) to get any press. Here's the link if anyone is interested.

And Dal J,  I agree; Twilight sucked. I saw it opening night and I could not believe it had such a big following. It was just a bland love story. Blah

Why do people elsewhere keep saying Stephen King pales in comparison on the popularity stakes? He was at the very top of the game for 30 (!) years. Then he got hit by a truck, nearly died, and ran out of ideas- which is fair enough when you've published the sheer amount that he has. Meyer won't be around 20 years. She's a fad. J.K. Rowling is excellent, she'll be around as long as she wants to be.

All Meyer has done, probably accidentally, is tapped into teenage girl fantasy boyfriend. It's so blatant to anyone but a teenage girl. A man who spends all his time talking about his feelings who is gorgeous and attracted to an ordinary girl FOR NO REASON. I watched ten minutes on YouTube and was laughing my way through it. All of his family are in couples (chicks love that), he has no male friends anywhere to be seen, and then he starts playing the piano!!! Fucks sake.

I can proudly say I haven't read even a half a page of any of the twilight books and those few lines I looked at sucked. The writing is basically like what you'd find in a middle school english class, with a better vocabulary i'll give Meyer that.
Stephen King at his absolute worst kicks her ass right in a fucking gutter. Books like Salems Lot and for the age group even the Cirque Du Freak series are how vampires should be done, all this romance crap like shes written is bad for the genre.
Plot and writing wise I have to give that vampire show True Blood some credit though, they make it work fairly well.

I was thinking about seeing the movie to see what all the hype is about but I think i'll skip that now...

There is no contest between King and Meyer. It's an insult to him to mention it.  America is very "What have you done for me lately?", and right now, Twilight is the big thing. Many people forget the Shining, Shawshank Redemtion, Salem's Lot, Carrie, and The Stand (I can seriously go on for hours), and it is sad.

In ten years, Twilight will be seen as a joke, while the majority of King's books will remain best sellers. The best thing that can come out of all of thie Twilight hysteria is that maybe after reading her books, readers will think to themselves, "Hell, I can write better than her and she is the most popular author in the world right now. Maybe I should write a novel." That is the only good thing that can come out of it.

Maybe I'm a little harsh. Also, a side bar. Sheridan and Tori are cooler than me because I actually had to pay and watch the movie.

So funny, because just two years ago Lisey's Story was wowing a lot of the literary critics, the first time he got some serious snobby street cred. And he just released a fourth short story collection. He's still goin strong.

Yeah at least give the girl, not everyone can be a Stephen King. Last time I checked the Twilight series wasnt doing to bad.

I am curious Dalmatianjaws, which King books have you read? Which ones did you like and dislike?
