Despite the fact that it's no longer big or clever, it seems people are still willing to remake Japanese/Korean horror movies with Hollywood stars. So while Sarah Michelle Gellar is still awaiting a stellar movie career off the back of The Grudge, Jessica Alba is putting in an order for hers with a remake of The Eye.

After the teaser a couple of weeks ago, here's the full trailer, for what it's worth:

It seems to be a very faithful remake of the goddamn frightening original, and if they stick with the original ending, maybe it won't matter that they've simply plugged the latest starlet into a potential franchise.

Lazy? Crazy? Or maybe it'll work?

i like the genre, also if it is a remake.
and it's jessica alba, what can go wrong?   Grin
it will not be the end of her career.

They give away the surprize ending in the trailer . . . not a good sign.

Apart from the fact that Alba is one of the worst actresses I have seen in a loooong time, the main difference between this and the remake of 'The Grudge' is that 'The Eye' original is a VERY good film!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed 'Ju On: The Grudge' and the original is superior to the remake (even though it had the same Writer/Director at the helm!), but it was not in the same class as 'The Eye'.

The thing I am most confused about is the very idea behind remaking these quality Asian Horror films for the American (and other Western) market.
Ok, I understand how profitable a remake of a film which has had a certain level of success can be, not to mention how trendy the Asian Horror "genre" is at the moment, but I am talking about remaking good foreign language films in English, with a Western cast where possible.
Am I the only one frustrated at quality films being remade for the ignorant masses who can't be bothered to read subtitles?

I went to see Pan's Labyrinth and when the subtitles first came up the audience groaned.

That's why American remakes happen.

Saw the U.S. version of Pulse last night. People say The Grudge is bad? Check out that honking dog turd.

I have managed to steer well clear of the remake of 'Pulse', but then again, I didn't think much of the original anyway....although I do own it on DVD...as part of my addiction.

It is both surprising and comforting that no-one has decided to remake the wonderful 'A Tale Of Two Sisters' which is my favourite Asian Horror film, although 'The Eye' does run it pretty close.

If I hear of any rumours about such a remake chances are you will hear my scream from way over the pond!  Sad

OH MY GOD!!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0815245/

I had no idea! This...is...TERRIBLE!

Directed by Charles and Thomas Guard, famous for....absolutely nothing, that's what!  And written by Craig Rosenberg, famous for...your guess is as good as mine! Perhaps he holds a world record for balancing kittens on his nose, but he sure as hell hasn't written anything of merit!!!

Now I know exactly how that would-be giant green man felt when he uttered the line "Don't make me angry"

This is just not right!!!

The only good thing about this remake is that it will star Emily Browning, who is actually a damn fine actress...other than her inclusion...the remake is doomed to failure.  Cry

You answered your own question there. Here are a couple of stills from the remake of A Tale Of Two Sisters:

Casting Emily Browning as the younger sister is a mistake and I feel that they are missing a trick.

A much better casting decision would have Browning as the elder of the two sisters and Miranda Cosgrove, from The School of Rock, as the younger.

Miranda Cosgrove

Although, as I mentioned earlier, I will be interested in seeing how Browning performs, I think that she has a really good career ahead of her, she is very talented.
Anyone in doubt should watch her in Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, without doing very much she constantly steals the screen, and the film itself is actually pretty good, don't believe the haters.
