Talk about a sick joke.

Not since having that wet dream involving a three-way with Jessica Biel and Paul Giamatti have I been so simultaneously aroused and disturbed as I was checking out the pic below -- Our first 'official' glimpse of Heath Ledger's The "Joker" for the upcoming The Dark Knight . . . Which, in case you've been in a coma, is the sequel to the awesome Batman Begins

While I'm not much of a comic fan boy I was so overwhelming impressed at the major achievement Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale did in not only putting the Batman series back on track but also giving us all a nice mindwash worthy of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in helping us to forget the shitsplat known  as Batman and Robin

I also must admit that Heath Ledger has really proven himself as a great actor to me lately. He does an excellent turn as a drug addict in the small film Candy (co-starring an equally powerful Abbie Cornish) and actually helped me to overcome my reluctance enough to find Brokeback Mountain a touching love story.  And there's also the fact that while shooting the film Ledger created a bizarre "Joker" diary to help keep him in character. How nifty is that?!

WARNING: This "Empire" cover should only be checked out nowhere near your bedtime and kept away from small children, pets, pregnant women and/or any of those mentioned with a heart condition.

I'm still not convinced about the casting. His posture and body language is all wrong - he looks like a naughty sixth former told to wait in the lockers.

QUOTE: "he looks like a naughty sixth former told to wait in the lockers."

Translate into American please?

This guy is on the verge of being the best actor of this decade. If he plays his cards right, that is. He has an amazing article in The February 2006 GQ about why he took all those Teeny-Bopper roles . . . basically, he woke up one day and realized he wasn't a good actor, and since he was being paid so much he couldn't justify ruining a great movie, so he took roles he knew he could handle until he taught himself the craft.

Then he did Lords of Dogtown . . . and I challenge anyone not to think they're watching Val Kilmer in his comeback performance. I havn't seen Brokeback but I agree that he's outstanding in Candy.

He's the absolute perfect choice, barring bad directing.  He can bring the intensity of Nicholson without the campiness that permeated the original series(Yes, even the Burton installments).

And I hope they package that Joker Diary in the special edition DVD.

US Translation: He looks like a misbehaving senior who's been told by a teacher to wait in the changing rooms until the head of department has time to go and see him.

Ledger is a decent actor but he can't hold a candle to Nicholson.

Like with most of the characters he has played, when Nicholson took on the role of The Joker, he BECAME The Joker, not just in the sense of that film either, I can't think of the character and avoid thinking of Nicholson.

A lot of people feel that Johnny Depp did a good job as Wonka, and while I happen to think that Depp lights up every film he has been in since 'Nightmare On Elm Street', Gene Wilder IS Willy Wonka.

Do I think Ledger will pull it off?  I really hope so because it is an important role and if he hits the right notes it could open up his already wide-ranging career.

I think that Ledger and Nicholson are different kinds of actors. Nicholsons Joker perfectly suited Burtons vision and i think that Ledger is looking goof for Nolans.
I like the stitched-up sides of the mouth, very Chelsea Smile, im not completely sold on the clothes yet, the joker to me was always one that looked after his appearance but then if they're taking him in a different direction then it could work.
Im sold on this already, regardless of the bit of a letdown last act of Begins im sure Nolan can deliver a Batman and Joker movie that entertains and disturbs in spades.
