Alright.

So.

Yes, it was all bullshit. But damn it, you love the characters so much that they pull it off.

Literally, NOTHING mattered. Nothing in the entire show made any sense. It was all vagaries and nonsense. There's a thousand things "Jacob" could have done differently with the same (or better) end result. There is no final arc for many of the characters. And all that "baby of doom" shit was dropped.

But the producers of the show wisely focused on the characters because they knew the rest of their story was shit. And it leaves you feeling good in the end.  Trickery, but effective trickery.

I liked it a lot. I definitely wouldn't say nothing mattered, or that it didn't make sense.

And the whole Aaron thing was dropped when the psychic was shown to be a hoax by Eko.

The show has always been character centric, it's probably the most character centric show ever. Whilst he abandonment of some mysteries was a little unsatisfying (I can only think of one that I'm still really curious about actually), the actual experience of watching everything was amazing. That epic fight in the rain, the sideways reunions - so incredible. And all the mirrored scenes. Great stuff.

I don't feel tricked, either...

Most concise, perfect review from the San Francisco Chronicle:

"As a series finale it overjoyed the heart and annoyed the brain."

Can't say I disagree with that entirely. When it started to dawn on me that they were focusing on the sideways and not the Island I couldn't help thinking about the on-Island revelations that could have been, but I said from the start that having some mystery in tact was the way to go, so I got my wish. I'm surprised we both enjoyed it, I was convinced one of us would be disappointed.

AV Club review was good.

I don't really feel like I have burning questions, was there anything that mattered a lot to you that they ignored?

No huge questions, per se, just letdowns. For example, the black smoke. If it was really Jacob's evil brother all along, and that character's main goal was to get off the island, why killing Eko and many other people? To what end? I think the black smoke was written as a cool monster and only later did they decide what it actually was, and what it was doesn't explain most of its actions.  That seems to be the attitude of the entire series, building up huge mystery then coming up with dull answers that only answer part of the question. The split universe turning out to be some sort of partial heavenly realm is ... easy. Lazy. The ultimate deus ex machina. It's not that it doesn't "work" or "make sense" it's just that it's ho-hum, who cares? Their storyverse rules are broad and vague, which never makes for a great story.
