According to an MTV movie blog, the fourth Mad Max film is being developed as a 3D anime flick.  I don't think I'm alone when I say my first reaction is "what...?"  I've always kind of felt that this movie would be one of those that we'd always hear tidbits about its development, but it just gets tossed around so much that nothing actually gets made of it.  However, this latest interview with George Miller all but confirms that Max will be back.

Initially this rubbed me the wrong way, but there are a few really strong anime flicks out there, and my fingers are crossed it will be able to stand proudly against others like Akira.

I had a friend who auditioned for Mad Max 4 about ten years ago, for the part of 'Warboy'. So it's nearly happened several times. I may not be popular for saying this, but rather than doing an anime which pleases no one really, this is a prime candidate for a remake.

They're going anime because Captain Catholic won't sign on, that's the buzz in Hollywood at least (not about the anime, about the live action version).

A switch of mediums seems odd for this series. I could see a "spin off" sort of thing, something that takes place in the universe, like the "Animatrix" or those ones that went with the Dark Knight ... but ... this just seems so so odd.

I'd hate to see a remake cause there's no way they'd let them crash cars like that anymore, those were dudes taking real spills in ridiculous conditions. It will be like watching Blues Brothers 2000 with those new cars, totally boring.

Sheridan, I actually agree with you about the remake thing.  Even though I absolutely adore the originals, I've always wondered what they'd be like given a proper budget.

Although the thing with remakes is that you can either get something like The Thing, or something like Halloween.  We wouldn't want Mel to be upset if his iconic character got the latter.

Yep, Beyond Thunderdome.  Had Tina Turner in it.  It's kind of a sad movie to watch, because the first half of it is absolutely brilliant, then the second half is just a slap to the face.  It's also PG-13, so a lot of the stuff that was in the previous two movies wasn't gonna fly in this one.

Hahahahahah ... I love the second half. Brilliant stuff, though the train scene is just the final scene from road warrior.

A REMAKE?!  Are you guys serious?!!! Do you know what you're gonna end up with -- Some bland pretty boy (off some CW show you've never seen before because you're not a fourteen-year-old girl) driving around with CGI cars and explosions occurring all around him.  The villain will turn out to be his long-lost brother who went mental because he was spanked as a child.  Yadda-yadda-yadda.

I actually thing an amine film would be awesome because then you have no limits when it comes to the chase scenes.

BTW -- How much longer do you think the 3-D thing'll go before everyone tires of it yet again.  It went about six months in the 80s with the death knell being a "comedy" about Steve Guttenberg turning invisible.  (It also doesn't help that the theatres are charging another 3 bucks because of it.)

Yeah, I was pretty miffed at having to pay extra for 3D when I finally saw My Bloody Valentine the other day, it's already FAR too expensive here. And you have to buy the glasses at the counter with your ticket and then throw them away when you leave - after using them for just 90 minutes. What an utter waste of resources, how much shitty litter must that create? At least at the IMAX there's someone handing them out as you go in, then collecting them on the way out.

Tross, how do you NOT know about Beyond Thunderdome? They used to play in network televistion ALL the time growing up.  Everyone freaks out about PG-13 for some reason, I don't get why.

Thunderdome is a damn good film. It explains a lot more of the world and has a great ending that leaves it open for a sequel but also leaves you satisfied. Tina Turner is kick ass. And the whole Max is the Savior thing is wickedly cool. It's better than Mad Max but not as good as Road Warrior.

Sheridan, sounds like they really crack the whip over there across the pond.  Here there's just a box where you can dump them in when you leave.  I kept mind as a souvenir but have suddenly realized that all these films are using the same REAL technology.  So you can bet I'm gonna pay to see something else and then sneak into MONSTERS & ALIENS with my "souvenir".

I have been in a cave with Thunderdome, I must admit. And on the PG-13 thing, I have nothing against PG-13 flicks. I guess I dont like when sequels go to PG-13. I am saying that assuming that the first two were rated R.

T. Ross, THUNDERDOME is a pretty decent effort.  Just don't go expecting the awesomeness that is MAD MAX 2.  The only real problem with it (in my honest opinion) was the cheesy element of Max having to protect a group of kids.  Luckily the sappiness and cutesiness are kept to a mimimum.  And there is the awesomeness that is the thunderdome itself -- "Two men enter!  One man leaves!"
