Watchmen, released on Friday, was a massive success, pulling in more than $25 million on it's
opening day. This will surely please the suited businessmen behind the film who were banking on it being a smash hit. The flick opened at 3,611 cinemas, the widest ever release for an "R" (18)-rated movie. The midnight screenings banked $4.6 million on Thursday, attracting more than double the audience for Snyder's previous R-rated campfest,
300, which made a mere $2.5 million. Pocket change, I'm sure you'll agree.
Now the bad news: the movie is currently making less dosh than the aforementioned swords-and-sandals-and-CGI epic, which grabbed $28 million on it's opening day and went on to make $70 million in America in its opening weekend. Now the question is asked: will
Watchmen be able to survive the long haul?
300 got by because it was hilariously camp and made plenty of money in return visits. With a run time of almost three painful hours,
Watchmen has its work cut out for it.
