A new story out of Londonís Daily Mail reports Joel and Ethan Coen are set to retell the story of True Grit, the 1969 western that earned John Wayne his only Oscar win. However, the Coens wonít be working from Wayneís feature as they intend to go back to Charles Portisís 1968 novel, which has a spinster recalling that, when she was 14, she set off from her familyís 480-acre Arkansas farm to avenge her fatherís murder.
ďThe book recounts the girlís story,Ē Joel told the Daily Mail. ďIn the John Wayne film, she was played older. We want her to be her real age - itís her story!Ē
Donít get too excited though as it appears the Coens wonít begin work on the feature for two or three years as they are currently working on A Serious Man for Focus Features due in theaters on October 2 and will follow that up with The Yiddish Policemenís Union based on Michael Chabonís book.
Scott Rudin who worked with the Coens on No Country for Old Men will be producing both the True Grit feature as well as Yiddish Policemen.
