The long rumoured next project from Rob Zombie (director of 'House of 1000 Corpses', 'The Devil's Rejects' as well as the 'Halloween' remake) has been shrouded in mystery ever since the above poster art popped up on the internet many moons ago. Some claimed it would be a 70s style biker movie, others that it was an adaption of the Zombie co-written comic book 'The Nail', still others claimed it was a piece of fan art and had nothing to do with Zombie at all. Well, Zombie has finally come out and addressed the rumours directly on the set of 'H2'

From MTV
Quote
“It’s like an incredibly violent ’70s action movie. I can’t think of anything that’s like it. Just a gritty, gnarly, violent movie. But it’s not a horror movie in any way.”

With that out of the way, Zombie goes on to do his best to explain what “Tyrannosaurus Rex” is all about.

“It’s sort of like a cross between that Dustin Hoffman movie ‘Straight Time’ mixed with ‘Raging Bull’… sort of,” said Zombie. “I want to make a serious movie about this washed-up prizefighter who’s got this self-destructive tendency, and he comes out of prison and the only way he knows how to survive is by fighting.

He continued, “But his boxing career is over so he gets caught up in this sort of underground fight ring. But it’s all set in the ’70s, so it’s not like an ‘Ultimate Fighting’ type thing. It’s more like just nasty. It’s like if ‘Every Which Way But Loose’ was a serious movie. How about that? Minus the orangutan. [laughs]”

Furthermore, Zombie took the opportunity to dispel the rumor that “Tyrannosaurus Rex” was based on he and writer Steve Niles’ comic, “The Nail,” but at the same time, noting that that may make it a tough sell in Hollywood.

“Someone just said that and then everyone believed it,” Zombie said in regards to the rumor. “Nah, it has nothing to do with it. But these days nobody wants to make anything that isn’t a remake, a comic book or a sequel. So trying to get anyone to back original material is a nightmare.”

While I am glad we finally have some concrete details on this project, I think there is something to be said for keeping a certain amount of mystique when it comes to upcoming movies. In the world of blogging and 24 hour news coverage, gone are the days when you would walk in to a movie with no idea what you are about to see and be completely surprised and blown away. It would have been so much fun if Zombie had managed to pull that off. As for the idea itself I quite enjoy Zombie's style of filmmaking and this seems like the kind of picture he would excel at (if left alone by the studios).

I got on at 'House of 1000 Corpses' station and haven't looked back. Granted it's a pity he's doing remakes, but I think he did a damn sight better than most of the remake sludge coming out of Hollywood.
