Word is that Disney is strongly considering pushing Ratatouille
as a candidate for Best Picture come Oscar season. The film would still be up for Best Animated Picture but its presence in both categories may split tickets and leave Disney with nothing.
Of course Disneyís real concern ought to be the fact that Ratatouille
isnít the best picture of the year, it just isnít. Itís easy to get swept away on the tide of ridiculous hype that accompanies any film that overcomes a list of production problems as long as the Great Wall of China and turns out to not be bad, but seriously; itís good, but itís not that
Theyíd really be better off just going for Best Animated because, unless Beowulf
looks less like a wax dummy on the big screen than he does in the trailer, they are going to win. In the main category itís likely to be up against some serious Ďmessage filmsí and this is the time of year that Hollywood likes to briefly grow a social conscience to distract people from the fact that if they cut their salaries in half, they could pay off Third World debt. On the other hand... itís got a cute rat in it so who am I to judge?
