Marvel Entertainment reported its First Quarter earnings today and gave a few updates on its upcoming movies during the company's quarterly conference call.

Iron Man 2 is, of course, already filming for a May 7, 2010 release, but Marvel said this morning that the Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor is scheduled to start filming in the First Quarter of 2010. No formal offers have been made to actors, though they said that casting announcements are likely the next few months. Thor is targeted for a May 20, 2011 release.

Marvel added that The First Avenger: Captain America, to be directed by Joe Johnston, is scheduled to start filming in the summer of 2010 for a July 22, 2011 release.

In an interview with Empire magazine, Marvel's President of Production Kevin Feige talked about The Avengers as well:

"Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers [as writer] and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now – he'll be doing that over the summer."

The Avengers is coming to theaters on May 4, 2012.

It's a real shame Spider-Man won't be in it because it's rented out to Sony right now. Wonder who they will all be fighting.

spider-man wouldn't feature in the first movie anyway, it's be too much, i'm surprised they've set up black widow already

Thor bothers me. Sir Brannaughghghg is a horrible director. Great actor, but Hamlet looked like it was shot and edited by a first year film student.

Joe Johnson is a mediocre director.

What happened to Favreau and that french guy! THAT'S the caliber they need to strive for.

Plus, Captain America and Thor are weird characters. One is cheesily patriotic and the other is a fricking god ... I have no hopes for these, but I hope I'm proven wrong.

And did you see his Frankenstein movie? Awful. And 'Dead Again' was not a well directed movie either. There is, to date, nothing to indicate he can make a good movie here.

i hated frankenstein, but that's more becuse it's one of my favourite books than because it was poorly made, with different material and a studio behind him pushing him in a very specific direction i think he could well pull it off

as for cap and thor's 'cheesiness, that perception basically comes down to a lack of familiarity with the characters, if you knew as little about batman and spider-man as you do cap and thor they'd seem pretty lame too i'm sure, those character's both have a lot going for them, if you read the right books
