Straight from the author's blog (and the slightly less reliable Hollywood Reporter), indie film director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor) has been hired to helm the pilot episode of A Game of Thrones, the highly expensive fantasy novel adaptation from HBO.

Dorky cover. Fantastic book.

This project will reunite McCarthy with Peter Dinklage, who starred in The Station Agent. Dinklage will play the cunning Tyrion and has long been the fan favorite for the role, so it's nice to see a major company taking note of what the fans want (*cough*Fox*cough*Wolverine*cough*).

He likes to be taken seriously as an actor.

A Game of Thrones (the series) will cover the first novel of George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series, often praise for being brutal, ruthless, and far better than most other fantasy novels (this writer would tend to agree, I finished the first book and it left me speechless).

HBO begins filming A Game of Thrones in Ireland this fall.

Wait this is...tv?

Dinklage is the only dwarf who looks like he could take my head off.

Oops, yeah, sorry. TV.
Big, expensive TV, but TV. I guess it's not really Moron material, except the fact that McCarthy has only done two very small indie features.   Super talented, but this is a pretty major risk for  HBO.
