After months of to-ing and fro-ing, the Norse God of Thunder in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Marvel flick Thor has been cast. It is *not* wrestler Triple H as was previously rumoured (he can't act!) No, it is this man: Chris Hemsworth! You may be asking yourself, "Who on earth is this Mister Hemsworth? I am not familiar with such an actor. Why is he Thor?" Well, you with the snooty thought process, this man is currently on screens in a brief role as Captain Kirk Snr in JJ Abrams' Star Trek reboot. He's also currently filming for Joss Whedon's Cabin in the Woods and will be the leading man in the yet-to-be-shot Red Dawn. If that's not enough, he was only in Home and Away for, like, a hundred and seventy episodes. This is good news for the long-delayed superhero flick. Expect more casting announcements in the coming months. Source: http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/exclusive-chris-hemsworth-is-thor/

Nice avatar Adam! Detective L Tom Hiddleston is Loki in Marvel’s ThorOver the weekend, news broke that Chris Hemsworth (who played George Kirk in Star Trek) had been cast as Thor in Kenneth Branagh’s big screen adaptation of Marvel’s Thor and the Summer 2012 superhero team-up film The Avengers. Nikki Finke is reporting that British actor Tom Hiddleston, who is almost a complete unknown to American audiences, has been cast as Thor’s nemesis Loki
Of course, the actor has ties to director Branagh, who starred with him in Ivanov on the London stage and the BBC miniseries Wallander. Hiddleston was also one of the actors on the short list being considered for the part of Thor, which should tell you something.
Based on the character from Norse mythology, Loki first appeared in Venus #6, published in August 1949, and was created by writer Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber and penciller Jack Kirby. According to Marvel.com, Loki is the son of Laufey, king of the frost giants of Jotunheim, one of the Nine Worlds of the Asgardian cosmology. The Asgardians discovered the small god-sized baby hidden at the giants’ main fortress after a war.
“Because Loki was the son of a king fallen in battle, Odin elected to adopt him and raise him as a son alongside his blood son Thor, the future god of thunder.” … “As Loki grew to adulthood, his inborn propensity for mischief had begun to manifest itself, and he earned the nickname God of Mischief. Loki attempted many times over the centuries to destroy Thor and seize the throne of Asgard for himself.” … “Finally, Odin magically imprisoned him within a tree as punishment for his many crimes to learn from his actions. Loki, fed up with Asgard, used his magic to escape his cell, and eventually met Eldred the sorcerer, who increased his training in the black arts. Finally, Loki confronted the fire demon Surtur of Muspelheim and offered him Eldred’s soul in exchange for power. Surtur accepted, and Loki assumed ownership of Eldred’s lands and minions. His foray into the black arts earned him the title of “god of evil” among the Asgardians, and he forged alliances with many of the realm’s enemies.”

I learnt a bit about Thor by playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance on XBox 360. A great resource I'm sure. Basically it's set in another world/Heaven (called Asgaard) and it's a kings and queens and sorcerers kinda vibe, but everyone is Viking-like. Loki is Thor's half brother and it's all about him trying to get the throne from Thor's father. Loki is a weedy figure of mischief and evil, a plotter rather than a fighter. Then at some point, Thor comes to earth, some believe he's the God of Thunder, others think he's insane. He has a big hammer and uses lots of lightning.

i don't see why everybody's so hung up on big name stars...seriously, both these guys seem far more suited to the roles than any of the names bandied about previously.
i bet money dalmationjaws winds up liking this movie. a lot.

You just set me up for a win/win bet. I'm so alright with that.
I'll withhold real judgement til Iron Man 2. If that's bad then the writing is on the wall for Marvel. If they make that great, than I'll have hope for Thor and Captain America.

Thanks Sheridan for that info. It sounds intresting. I dont know if this movie will be rubbish, but it will be interesting. 'My thoughts on Iron Man 1 were that Downey Jr. was good for the role, but kind of got annoying after a while.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Press Release
Marvel Studios announced today that Academy Award® nominated actress Natalie Portman has been cast to star as Jane Foster in the studio’s highly anticipated movie THOR. In the early THOR comics, JANE FOSTER was a nurse who became Thor's first love. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Portman will star opposite Chris Hemsworth who will play Thor and Tom Hiddleston who will play the villain Loki. Kenneth Branagh will direct the film.
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce THOR. Principal photography for the film is set for early 2010. The film will be released in the US on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: THOR. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
Portman will next be seen starring in Jim Sheridan’s BROTHERS opposite Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire. She recently wrapped production on HESHER, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and executive produced by her production company handsomecharlie films, and Don Roos’ LOVE AND OTHER IMPOSSIBLE PURSUITS, which also she executive produced. In 2004, she won a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress as well as an Academy Award nomination in the same category for CLOSER. She also earned critical acclaim for her role in GARDEN STATE and is most well known for her role as Queen Padme Amidala in the STAR WARS Trilogy. Other film credits include THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL, V FOR VENDETTA, COLD MOUNTAIN, ANYWHERE BUT HERE, HEAT, BEAUTIFUL GIRLS, and THE PROFESSIONAL.
THOR is one of a continuing slate of films being produced by Marvel Studios based on the Marvel characters, including IRON MAN 2 on May 7, 2010, THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA on July 22, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.
Portman is represented by Brillstein Entertainment Partners, CAA and George Sheanshang.
And Portman gains one place in the nerd league tables: Natalie Portman (3) - Amidala/Evey Hammond/Jane Foster Trust me when I say this is really good news. The fact that Portman has been cast in a role that is not Asgardian means that the film should spend a significant portion of time in the our world; making it more complex than the straight forward sword and sorcery (hammer and sorcery?) narrative that the movie purported to be. With the addition of Jane Foster we are guranteed a large part of what makes the Marvel version of the Thor character unique will be exploited - alter ego Donald Blake. So not only do we have a phenomenal actress in the movie, but this news reveals a little bit more about the approach that the filmmakers are taking. And it's good. Hopefully the fantastical world of Asgard and the 'real' world Earth (Midgard) will converge, despite the fact that previous claims had the film set almost exclusively off-world. Portman's involvement in the project was long-rumoured - now the question is, could we be so lucky as to have the other rumour be true? The rumour that Jessica Biel is also in the running for a lead female role, possibly The Enchantress? The only problem with that happening is that Marvel wouldn't have an audience left, what with all the fanboys having died and gone to heaven.

I thought Iron Man 1 was great. Good flow and great relationships. Fantastic comedy with indications it can go darker. Very good writing and a great "universe."
Felt the same about The Incredible Hulk, though at this stage of the game American audiences are burnt out on the Ang Lee version and used to more "realistic" super hero movies like Dark Knight. The Hulk is a great concept, but very silly. They actually made the Iron Man a bit too realistic maybe to mesh those two together. What worries me is that Thor won't fit either. All the other story lines at least touch on the scientific and have rules. The Hulk is a silly idea but he has definitive rules that make you accept it. But with a god ... it can get stupid REALLY quick. And I just find it a bit more boring as a concept.
As they try to put all these together they will need VERY talented writers to avoid the Pirates Sequel-itis. And Hellboy 2 Syndrome. Too many characters, plot lines, and themes.

Yeah, I can certainly see him as Thor. This cast has come together, looked hopeless for a while.
