Producer Robert Evans (Chinatown) is set to develop a feature film based on the 1970s British TV show UFO.

The Star Trek-alike was a Gerry Anderson effort, the first of his television shows to feature live action as opposed to the 'supermarionation' technique seen in Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Stingray (recently parodied in Team America: World Police). The premise is that ten years from now aliens from a dying planet attack Earth in secret and are fought off by an international agency committed to thwarting them.

Yes, it's another remake, and a fairly generic concept, but let's hope that the project - based on a somewhat obscure property - has been chosen because the creators have something really interesting that they want to do with it. Okay, maybe it's a vain hope, maybe they think people are just in the mood for positive, day-glo sci-fi again and want to jump on the bandwagon. Cheaply. Neither of the writers attached to the project appear on IMDb, so they're an unknown quantity, but the original program was not a cheerful as it may appear, dealing with drug use, adultery and other adult themes.

Addendum: remember how certain Trekkies were up in arms about Uhura's disrobing in the Abramsverse? There'll be no such consternation here, that's just how British sci-fi rolls:

And if you were wondering how much cooler Star Trek would've been with a theme tune as groovy as UFO's, wonder no more:

very much depends on your taste...personally i don't think british tv has been good since the sixties (this counts as sixties to me because it was out in 1970, which means it must've been in development in 69, and listen to that theme tune!) so i find quite a bit of this stuff insanely watchable, especially because of the different sensibilities back then. if you've ever seen and enjoyed the avengers, the champions or the prisoner, you'd probably find something about this to enjoy
