Javier Bardem will play the villain in Oliver Stone’s sequel to his 1987 examination of greed and excess
Wall Street. He joins Hollywood ‘wunderkind’ Shia Lebouf and ‘golden oldie’ Michael Douglas, who will reprise his role as the infamous Gordon Gekko, on the cast list. Bardem is probably best known for his role as the bowl haired villain in
No Country for Old Men however before this he had already had a long and successful career in mainly Spanish films, including a collaboration with legendary filmmaker Pedro Almodovar in
Live Flesh. In
No Country for Old Men Bardem stole the show with his brilliant depiction of evil without motive and it seems that this has been influential on the choice to cast him here.
I’m not usually one to advocate sequels but I suppose with all the global economic problems it is an appropriate time to make a sequel to
Wall Street. Former Hollywood heavyweight Stone hasn’t made a decent film in this millennium yet but this could give him a chance to reprove his directorial credentials.
