Dat Franchise Boy JJ Abrams has officially been 'invited back' as a producer on Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible 4. The
Star Wars Star Trek director's critically acclaimed third instalment in the Mission Impossible series came about after the project passed through the hands of David Fincher and Joe Carnahan. Tom Cruise ploughed through the first two seasons of
Alias on DVD (probably saw the pilot for
LOST) and decided to offer Abrams the movie, his first feature film.

Now with the mega-successful
Star Wars Star Trek behind him, most studios and movie-goers have a considerable amount of faith in Abrams, and considering the quality of M:I-3 and the stunning production value of Trek, this is good news any way you look at it. It's unusual for the director to be invited back, considering Cruise has deliberately sought out different collaborators for each film in the series thus far; most are speculating that Abrams' involvement will be in the role of producer only because of this reason among others. Might Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard, or somebody else from the Bad Robot stable be given the opportunity?
Abrams told TV Guide 'Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing,' so the project is in the works as we speak. Hopefully they're over the whole traitor-in-our-midst plot, the series has kind of done that to death. Whatever their really cool idea is, the can't possibly top the awesomeness of this scene:
