Rumors have been percolating for some time now, but they are rumors no longer, with word from the horse's mouth that Disney are moving ahead with a fourth Pirates of the Carribbean movie. ComingSoon spoke with Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the franchise:
for Disney, the priority is most definitely "Pirates." "It's a great franchise for them and for us, too," he said. "A beloved character and Johnny's really excited about coming back to Captain Jack. He certainly is interested in Tonto, but Disney's priority is to get 'Pirates' made first. You never know what's going to happen, but they would like it."
Bruckheimer shared that the original writers, Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot, were "writing 'Pirates' as we speak," and he said it was "funny" and a "whole new way of going" although he wouldn't share more than that.
Lord of the Rings was the new Star Wars, Pirates the new Indiana Jones. Does that mean we can expect aliens in the fourquel?* Yes. Yes, it does. The other rumors stand as follows: Tim Burton may direct in Gore Verbinski's absence; Russell Brand may play a member of the Sparrow family; there will be no Bloom/Knightley. I'm willing to bet there's truth to at least one of those. Maybe only one.
How do you feel about the prospect of a fourth Pirates film? I figure it was inevitable, and I'm glad they're going to make it sooner rather than later (a la Rocky, Die Hard etc). And Dead Man's Chest is nothing like as bad as people want you yo think it is. Watch it again.
*I know.
