Empire is reporting that another Indiana Jones sequel is in the works. According to producer Frank Marshall, the project is going ahead providing they find a script everyone's happy with. Yes, that took twenty years last time.

Quote
"It's really about the script," says the veteran Indy producer. "Once we see that, we'll see. We're not going to wait another 20 years. We'd all love to make another one. I'm anxious to hear the idea! We had a great time making the last one and, as Harrison said, we need to make this one soon. We're not getting any younger."

Marshall's words come after similar statements by Shia La Beouf on the Transformers promo trail. You can hear what he had to say over at the BBC.

I was under the impression that plan for a fifth movie had been abandoned. There was a lot of sequel talk prior to the release of Crystal Skull, not so much after... And now that Dr Jones is a bona fide family man the dynamic of the series is altered considerably, even moreso than Ford's advancing age and the change in period setting. Whatever the eventual idea, hopefully aliens and computer graphics won't play a role in this new instalment.

Anyone remember how they played the "I'm getting too old for this shit" card all the way back in Raiders?

I'd love to know what's going on in Spielberg's mind when it comes to this.

Can I be truthful and say I enjoyed Indy IV? I know it's de rigeur to bash the film, and that in order to be considered a true film geek I should tear it apart mercilessly, but you know what? It pushed my buttons. It lacked a certain something, but I'd rather watch it than the Mummy films and a LOT of other action adventures. It was a good film. It was fun.

I just like it. I refuse to throw rotten tomatoes at George Lucas just because everyone else does - and that doesn't mean you guys, I just mean in the talkback forums on aintitcool.com for example. Frankly, Indy investigates strange world mysteries. The crystal skulls are a pretty funky mystery. I really don't understand why people went 'Aliens? What? That's not realistic OR indy!' - What, and a golden box that talks to god and produces flesh-melting apparitions is?

What needs to be done to improve? Maybe just give post-production an extra two months, have less monkey swinging and considerably less characters. Loved Marion, even liked Shia - but Abner Ravenwood was about as useless as characters get. The script needs to be more about Indy this time, really.

I still liked it though! I think there should be another one just so Spielberg can say 'Look, Indy IS still cool, and this time - we'll really rock your world!'

Apologies for the rant, but it's how I feel Smiley

kinda close to you on that one. i find the majority of the film enjoyable - and literally have a shit-eating grin watching the motorbike-library chase - even though i agree with the sentiments that aliens feel out of place in the established indy mythos and the reliance on cg took away from what was a big draw about those old movies - old fashioned filmmaking.

wouldn't take a strong argument to convince me that temple of doom is still the worst one...raiders is a  masterpiece, though.

Marion: You're not the man I knew ten years ago.
Indiana: It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.   Grin

I am amazed, but everyone involved seems to be keen and who's going to tell Spielberg he can't?
It's nuts.

i know you can't really replace harrison ford...but what if they did? would people be accepting of it do you think? this was originally meant to be lucas' answer to james bond after all...unfortunately it would mean a redux if they did it now, seeing as how they already have movies where he's old.

I agree with the online consensus that Nathan Fillian should have been brought in as replacement. He's more suitable than Shia.

Fillion should play his nemesis, Iowa Smith.

Everyone gets hung up on the aliens. Yes, it was a poor choice for Indiana Jones and trying to transfer that hero into a different genre really didn't work. But that is the least of the film's problems.

Temple of Doom, bad as it was, had a literacy to  the filmmaking. The story lacked likable characters, was needlessly dark, and had weak dialog. But it at least made some sort of sense.

Indy IV is retarded. And I use that word's true meaning. It was a stunted, weak, lesser form of filmmaking.

The entire "quest," which is such a challenge to our hero, was already accomplished by a single man who went crazy for no apparent reason.

The skull has multiple magical properties that come into play whenever the characters need to get out of a jam.

Indiana walks into archeological digs and destroys them for no reason (rather than to save his life like in Last Crusade).

The hero falls a quarter mile in the beginning of the film and we're supposed to believe he can get hurt falling off a motorcycle or getting punched later in the same film.

Shia as a greaser.

The monkey scene, etc.

remove the aliens and i am cool with all of those things (barring the monkey scene) - it's saturday morning serial logic. the fridge nuking scene in crystal skull brings a smile to my face because of its sheer implausibility, not so much the dinghy ride down a mountain in doom...
