So the remake juggernaut rolls on with the recent announcement that Dimension films is planning a remake of the horror classic An American Werewolf in London. It is an announcement that may not be welcomed with open arms by many, due to the fact that the original film has a large cult following. Directed by John Landis in 1981, the film begins as two American backpackers are ravaged by a mysterious beast whilst hiking across the Yorkshire Moors in England. The original film combined genuine horror with black comedy and contained some of the best pre-CGI special effects ever seen, demonstrated in the famous Werewolf transformation scene.  A sequel of sorts was made in 1997, An American Werewolf in Paris which did use CGI. What is interesting looking back is that it is the more recent CGI special effects of the Paris film that have aged much less graciously.

There's a new rumor this will now be a third movie in the "franchise"

Werewolf in Paris was uninspired, although it did allow for that awesome Bush remix of "Mouth"

If anyone hasn't seen the original, rent it. Simple story but OMG those effects are still awesome.

The first film is an all round masterpiece. If that werewolf howl doesn't put a chill down your spine, nothing will. It also really captures the mood, look and atmosphere of London in the early 80s, which is a fascinating thing in itself.

American Werewolf In Paris is a dull studio mess with fx far worse than a film made 20 years earlier.

Totally agree. I'm just trying to be more positive these days.

Someone should do a cartoon wolf mash-up. New Moon, American Werewolf in Paris, Underworld, The Day After Tomorrow ... then kick their ass with the old school air-filled bladder technology of 1980
