John Woo has announced that his next film will be a WW2 epic about the 1st American Volunteer Group of the Chinese Air Force in 1941 and 1942, a group of slightly irregular US pilots who flew against the Japanese invaders from their bases in Yunnan, Southern China, and Burma. Apparently the Chinese name of the film translates to
Flying Tiger Heroes. Woo is largely recognised as one of the ultimate masters of directing action sequences. This was never more evident than in the frenetic
Hard Boiled starring Chow Yun Fat and Tony Leung in which the meticulously choreographed action often resembled bullet ballet. The new film is set to become the most expensive Chinese film of all time with a reported budget of $160 million.
Flying Tiger Heroes features similar dogfighting themes to the upcoming George Lucas produced
Red Tails but which of the two will be better? Woo’s last film
Red Cliff was reasonably well received but prior to that he had struggled to match the action packed heights of
Face/Off and his earlier Hong Kong flicks. However I think this story will provide sufficient ammunition for Woo to shoot an intensely action packed spectacle. But what about
Red Tails? Recent hits for Lucas have included............. well, need I say more
