I was never into Tformers. I never knew about GI JOE. My childhood was three things: Turtles, Masters of the Universe and Thunder - Thunder - Thunder - Thundercats! I'd be so hyped for a TCats movie if they announced one. This concept art (for an abortive attempt) looks epic. Everyone has their own ’80s cartoon franchise that meant something to them, and mine was ThunderCats: The Rankin/Bass series followed of a race of humanoid felines from the planet Thundera, forced to evacuate after their home comes under siege by the fearsome Mutants of Plun-Darr (who looked a bit like reptilian Ernest Borgnines.) Yes, I still hold a fond place in my heart for Lion-O, Cheetara, Panthro, Tygra, Snarf and the rest, and so Warner Bros.’ announcement a while back of a Thundercats movie filled me with the warm, fuzzy feelings one typically associates with watching Saturday morning TV while eating peanut-butter-and-grape-jelly sandwiches. The script, written by Paul Sopocy, was to follow Lion-O’s origin myth from young cub to his anointment as Lord of the ThunderCats, and was to be directed by veteran art director Jerry O’Flaherty.
In conjunction with our coverage of Comic-Con 2009, Movieline has obtained O’Flaherty’s never-before-seen Thundercats concept art, demonstrating just how gorgeous and ambitious his vision for this production is. but it's not happening anymore, and this is the first that concept art has been released for the movie they were going to make. if it happens eventually (which it no doubt will) i imagine it will look extremely different. i loved bucky o'hare too! |

The producer of the Thundercats movie contacted Megan to say how much he liked that video.
And yeah we varified who he was.

Somehow I never heard of Thundercats until I was in college. Don't ask me how I missed it.
I was really into G.I. Joes when I was a kid. That's the only one that really mattered and it's already been butchered.

yeah, the designs are great. i wouldn't want it all cgi though, should be prosthetics (like tim burton's planet of the apes) and maybe digital make-up on top...

good cause we were kids good, but i could probably sit through an episode for nostalgia factor - and if you don't know what you've been missing it might be worth cheking out. the theme tune will forever be among the greatest of cartoon theme tunes: bucky! captain bucky o'hare! (let's croak us some toads!) |

that theme tune is still amazing. I swear they don't make cartoons for kids like that anymore, that's probably just me having the standard "in my day" mentality though. I'd never really heard of GI Joe until i was older but interestingly, according to wikipedia, Larry Hama, the guy who created Bucky O 'hare, also wrote the marvel comic books GI Joe: A real American hero. Both of course turned into the 2 animated TV series we watched as kids. Madness! i wouldn't want it all cgi though, should be prosthetics (like tim burton's planet of the apes) and maybe digital make-up on top... Know what you mean. Prosthetics should always be used instead of CGI unless absolutely necessary. Just look at Lord of the Rings now, the Orcs still look brilliant but Gollum's CGI looks dated as hell even though it was groundbreaking on the films release. Still think how they did Gollum ( too cute and too CGI) is the only mistake from the LOTR films well and the stodgy ending that just wouldn't end. Did I just open a can of worms? |

Yeah, they're amazing films. I'm actually impressed how well the CG holds up. A lot has to do with the story. If you're absorbed in the story you'll forgive unrealistic FX to an extent. There were SO many companies working on the fx in Lord of the Rings that there are a lot of inconsistencies in quality.
I still watch the Gollum scenes and his close up give me chills, I swear you can touch him and he's just a cartoon. Amazing work.
Prosthetic are always better when possible, though. Altough some of the LOTR design bugged me. The Orcs are so bulky that they don't seem scary to me. I can't wait to see how they do Goblins in Hobbit, I hope they play with the design a bit, cause I always though Goblins should be thin and spidery myself.
