Paul Giamatti is to take over the role of Larry in the upcoming Three Stooges film originally set to be played by Sean Penn. The Farrelly Brothers, who are directing the film, had Benicio Del Toro and Penn attached as Moe and Larry respectively with Jim Carrey linked to the role of Curly. Giamatti's varied resume includes Sideways, Fred Clause and the brilliant American Splendor where he played everyday cynic Harvey Pekar the creator of the autobiographical comic book of the same name as the film.

Giamatti as Harvey Pekar

The Farrellys have said that the new film will not be biographical or a remake but instead new Three Stooges episodes set in the present day. The plot of the episodes is said to be an adventure that revolves around the Stooges characters. The film taken to MGM studios will start production later this year and is set to be released in 2010.

In the small list of brotherly filmmaking partnerships The Farrelly brothers are definitely somewhere near the bottom, with the Coens undoubtedly topping. However they do have their merits and are probably well suited to making a stooges movie due to their expertise in slapstick.

This really, really sounds like a bad project. I'm kind of in shock that it's not all just a gag.

This could really embarrass 3 Hollywood stars. But if they just copy the best sketches the 3 Stooges did the first time round, it'll be hilarious, it almost all still holds up.

Wasn't Chaplin a bio pic?

I thought this was set within the reality of the original sketches?

Yeah. If they try to make the Brady Bunch movie, they will fail.
