As far as unlikely action heroes go, Adrien Brody is one of the most unlikely. Yet despite him lacking the macho charisma of your Stallones and your Schwarzeneggers, 20th century Fox and Robert Rodriquez have signed up the Oscar winner to star in
Predators as a heroic mercenary.
Predators is set to be a direct sequel to the first
Predator film ignoring the much maligned AVP films and the equally maligned Danny Glover starring
Predator 2 (I secretly quite like it though). Alongside Brody the film will star Alice Braga, Danny Trejo, Walton Goggins, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali and Louiz Ozawa. This odd bunch will be directed by Nimrod Antal with shooting to begin imminently and a planned release date of July 9th next year.
Despite the lukewarm critical reception it received on its release in 1987,
Predator is now considered one of the best action films of the 80's and definitely one of Schwarzenegger's best moments. Rodriguez reportedly tried to recruit the big man for
Predators but the Guvnor was having none of it.
I think most people will agree that it's a strange call to cast Brody as the lead. I'm not questioning his credentials as an actor, he's a fine one no doubt, but who said you need to be a good actor to be a good action hero? Arnie himself is evidence you don't.
