Iron Man director John Favreau has ruled himself out of the running to direct
The Avengers as well as confirming that Ed Norton won't be appearing in
Iron Man 2 as the Incredible Hulk. Here's what Favreau had to say on the matter,
"They'll have to [find a different director], because I'm not going to be available," he explained. "It's something I'm being the executive producer on, so I'll definitely have input and a say."
If your a bit ignorant when it comes to comic books like moi, then you might not know that The Avengers is the name of the team of superheroes that includes Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Ant-Man and a number of others. Basically all the Marvel films that are coming out are leading up to the this super project, and fans have been treated to little hints of whats to come with cameos such as Nick Fury's at the end of
Iron Man. In the interview with Favreau he expresses concerns about bringing the different franchises together though,
"It's going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with 'Avengers' you're going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor," he continued. "How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it's going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we've created.
To be honest, I think Favreau's concerns about the project are warranted. Not only because of the problem combining the 'science' of Iron Man with the supernatural elements of Thor, but also because I find it hard to see how they will be able to strike a balance between all the different character's narratives. Also, It's all very well tagging on scenes to the end of the films to show us how the films are all connected but really that is only exciting for people who are fans of the comics. I for one had never heard of Nick Fury before watching Iron Man, so SLJ's appearance at the end had little impact on me.
What do you think? Will The Avengers transfer comfortably from page to screen or is the idea of an Avengers film better in theory than in practice, like Communism.
