So basically, you're saying one of his movies in a completely different genre is good ... that doesn't cut it for me.

Of course, i'm dubious cause the only Spike Lee movies I've seen are Summer of Sam and The Inside Man, and both were AWFUL in terms of directing, so I've never been a fan.

Also, 25th Hour and Troy aside ...  STAY is one of the most pathetic, juvenile, film-student-esque screenplays EVER, Kite Runner is absolute shit (based on a shitty novel that got famous because it's about under-aged sodomy rape in the middle east) and Wolverine really is as bad as they say. This does not bode well, I'm telling you.  These books are great DESPITE the "thees" and "thous" and "this my my boring lineage that I'll spout to you whilst riding my stallion" crap that makes fantasy novels suck. Behind it all is a very complex, intricate, character-driven story. I don't think this guy can cut it. God I hope so, since I love the books so much, but I'm dubious at best.

As for the books, I've heard that #4 is still grat, but pissed a lot of people off because it grew unwieldy and rather than cut the story in half he focused on half the caracters. Book #5 will tell much of the same timeline but from the other characters point of view.

I'm halfway through #3 at the moment and, while it's still good, it's REALLY bogging down compared to the first two.

I read all the first 3 books back to back so they have all kind of merged into one big story. In hindsight, 3 definitely is too big and feels a bit unstructured compared to the first 2, but the writing is of the same quality and it has some of the most amazing moments from the series so far.
On the other hand, I think he made a mistake or two in his narrative decisions in the 3rd one, i won't go into details because I don't want to ruin it for anyone.

I don't rate Spike Lee that highly, as a director and as a person, but 25th Hour is a brillliant film. Roger Ebert put it in his top 10 films of the decade. That is stretching it slightly, but it is really great.

I'll have to check it out. I figure there's got to be a reason every famous director is famous.

Winter is coming, apparently.

Only show I'm as excited for is Boardwalk Empire, which also released a new trailer the other day.

I don't think I've ever anticipated TV like this. Movies yeah, but never TV.

Wow, that really is a teaser. 'winter is coming' is the motto of the main family/house in the books by the way. Both these shows look amazing.

I tried to get a runners job on Game of Thrones but i'm guessing they got about a million applications. I suppose working on it would ruin the viewing experience anyway, that's what i say to console myself anyway.

I watched the Boardwalk Empire trailer, knowing nothing about it, and all I could think was "wow, this looks like a low-rent scorsese"

Low and behold ... Scorsese does TV!

That teaser has been so popular on HBO that the author of the books has refused to allow any spoilers on his blog anymore, becaues of the influx of new fans.

Same story, told the same way. Dullsville with a high budget. It won't last.

They just announced that SKY bought all the UK rights to HBO shows, past and present. So these will be on SKY.

Any of you Brits know WTF that is?

it's the main satellite broadcasting company in the UK. I don't have it at the moment so I guess i'll have to wait until Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire come out on DVD.

Yeah I know. The BBC should have bought the rights to Game of Thrones, it's got the potential for a big audience I think and of course it would have meant no adverts which makes a massive difference.

BBC already messed up with The Wire. How the hell they put that in the slot the did I'll never know. Channel 4 really is the best network we have, they need to have one ad-free channel...

In the book, Peter Dinklage's character is monstrously deformed as well as a dwarf, stacking up the odds against him. By making his face normal they lessen the strength of his character.

Poor Peter Dinklage. The public want to see him deformed.

Finally got round to reading the 4th book a few weeks ago. It's definitely the weakest of the series but by no means a bad book.

The stills look awesome. You're right about Tyrion but I can see why they would change him for TV. I don't think it will do too much damage. All of the other characters look reasonably close to how I imagined.
