It's a sequence really, but if any of you have never seen the beginning of the original When A Stranger Calls, watch it on your own, at night, with headphones in and it's a masterclass.
What's the scariest scene you've ever watched?

OK spoiler alert and im sure im gonna get pounced on for my choice here but here 'tis.
Th Ring (U.S) yes that scene where ex-hubby is alone in the apartment trying to suss out the tape and sits there watching tv when...well i was alone at night and it was blowing a gale outside and basically when she-devil-ghost-girl crawled out the telly my heart just kinda snapped in two and my tiny-whities needed replacing sharpish.

The Japanese Ring - best horror film of the last ten years. The American remake - pale by comparision. Need proof? When she first watches the tape in the cabin, see the Japanese version of that scene, then the American. One will make your skin crawl, the other is the work of a hack.
The original Dark Water is also fantastic.

When a Stranger Calls?
REALLY? I'll have to check it out, I had no faith.
As for me, I've got a couple.
The Others: when the little girl tells her brother that there's a little boy standing behind the curtain . . . *shudder* . . . is brilliant.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind : when the Greys break into the kid's house and you NEVER see them and you don't know if they're good or bad yet.
Signs offers one of the most chilling scenes in recent memory. Joaquin Phoenix in the closet, watching the reports from India and the thing walks past the kid's birthday party . . .
Jaws:the opening scene.
I Am Legend: when Neville finds the nest. I know this isn't released in the UK yet, but trust me. If the entire movie had stayed at the quality and terror of this sequence, it would have gone down in history. People left the theater. Many considered leaving, myself and two companions included, not because it was a bad movie (not at that point, anyway) but because we needed a break. It was quite something.

Yeah, the original Stranger, not the remake. Watch the opening 20 minute sequence. Don't bother with the rest of the film.

watched both the japanese and american Ring. definitely preferred the american one.
movies don't scare me anymore, which i hate cause being scared can be awesome. shocker moments still work wonders though (like the face in the window in the awful, awful Grudge, my god what a dumb movie - the scare is totally unexpected though)

I know its not a horror film as such, but i think the one that sticks in my mind is the old John Hurt meets the facehugger in Alien... when it launches up through the mist. It's one of those "you know somethings coming" moments when you first watch it, and when it happens.. Likewise the "birth" of the chestburster.. even if the end of the scene where it "runs" off the table looks a bit crap nowadays, as if someone's pulling a rubber toy on a piece of string.

The 1999 version of House on Haunted Hill scared me quite well the first time I saw it.
As far as recent movies go, probably the scene in I Am Legend where Will Smith goes into the dark building after his dog. That scene had me scared of my own basement for about a week.

I love my horror movies, but the one that fucked me up more than any other was Audition.
Anyone who has seen it knows what I'm talking about. Fuuuuuckkkk!

Yeah, I saw Audition. Not what cheese wire was meant for. Oddly enough, it was leant to me by TV presenter Matthew Wright.

Gonna have to go with The Shining when Wendy finds Jack's work. "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" beats out even "sucks to your assmar!" as a good what the hell phrase.

Gotta go with the scene where the mother discovers Chucky is alive in Childs Play. For two reasons, 1. it's filled with ace tension and 2. Dolls/toys that come to life scare the fuck out of me.

It is great to see that most people watch horror, but my choice of horror is really horror, such as I think the scariest scene in horror history is this one scene in "The Exocism of Emily Rose". It was when Emily, was in the barn and the demons were giving their names. Watch that at night with all the lights out.

Emily Rose? I saw it but really didn't like it much. I loved Laura Linney in it, but that's because I can watch her in anything and be fascinated. While I appreciate that they tried something different by moving a lot of the movie into the courtroom, I think that may have been the reason why a lot of the "flashback" sequences lose their tension. There just wasn't as natural of a buildup as there are in more traditional thrillers.

I say The Descent...the beginning starts off slow which was done purposely and then like after the first 30 minutes of the movie, practically all the scenes were the scariest scenes I've seen..I practically jumped out of my seat like 10-20 times during this movie haha...it has the most random times these monsters come up and it scares the heck out of me!

a couple of mine:
The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre when he bolts out of the room, knocks the guy on the head with the hammer, pulls him back and slides the door closed.
The last scene of Friday the 13th when Jason leaps out of the water...
