Hammer to make 'The Woman in Black'

More news from Hammer Horror. Today it was announced that Hammer have optioned the rights to Susan Hill's best selling novel, The Woman in Black. The book has been adapted before, a British TV version that was just as chilling as its source material.
For those unfamillliar with the book, here's a synopsis from Hammer

The story follows a young lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who is ordered to travel to a remote village and sort out a recently deceased client’s papers. As he works alone in the client’s isolated house, Kipps begins to uncover tragic secrets, his unease growing when he glimpses a mysterious woman dressed only in black. Receiving only silence from the locals, Kipps is forced to uncover the true identity of the Woman in Black on his own, leading to a desperate race against time when he discovers her true intent.

Wife of Wossy Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass) is confirmed for the screenplay and it is set to be directed by James Watkins, who is responsible for the disturbing Eden Lake. With The Resident, the first of the new wave of Hammer Horror films, not due out until later this year, it remains to be seen if Hammer will be able to adapt to the 21st century. The Woman in Black is certainly the sort of project they should be taking on though, so the signs are good.
