Paramount pictures have just released a press release confirming that JJ Abrams and Tom Cruise will both be returning for the next installment of the Mission Impossible franchise.

 Here's the press release

Quote
HOLLYWOOD, CA (February 9, 2010) – Paramount Pictures announced today that it is making “Mission Impossible IV.” The film, which will be produced by Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot Productions and will star Cruise, will be released Memorial Day weekend 2011.

“Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey.

Screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are attached to write the script, from an original idea by Cruise and Abrams.
The studio, Cruise and Abrams are in now the process of identifying a director for the film.

Abrams’s last project with Paramount was “Star Trek,” which he produced and directed. The film grossed $385 million globally.  Cruise’s “Mission Impossible” franchise has grossed over 1.4 billion globally.
“Mission Impossible IV” will be co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions.

Cruise is represented by CAA. Abrams, Applebaum and Nemec are represented by WME.

It will be the first time Cruise has worked on a Paramount production in a while. He was fired/quit in 2006 after a 14 year association with the company, supposedly due to his Scientology related antics.

Nobody really cares about seeing the story of these films continue, the only reason this 4th installment exists is to prolong Tom Cruise's career.

I wouldn't say I cared about a continuation of the story, but each film is separate and I really enjoyed one and three, so I'd definitely be among those anticipating this.

That wire scene in the first installment is one of the most iconic, brilliant scenes in all action movies.

The second one is abyssmal.

The third one was fun as hell and well made, but relied far too much on Alias elements and didn't have any stand out action scenes like the first.

Hopefully they'll get the formula right with the fourth, which is the uniqueness of the first coupled with the "scam" elements of the third.
