Elizabeth Swann was like the Leia to his Jack Sparrow's Han. Except she ended up with Will Turner's Luke. Who wasn't her brother. This analogy just got weird...
Anyway, where I was going with this is that Jack Sparrow needs a Marion Ravenwood to his Indiana Jones, and it would seem as though that'a the direction things are headed in with this bit of casting news from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Rumour has it that Penelope Cruz is likely to star in the forthcoming Pirates sequel alongside Johnny Depp, reuniting her with Nine director Rob Marshall, who takes over the reins from Gore Verbinski, and Blow co-star Johnny Depp.
Cruz's role is described as Jack Sparrow's foil and equal, which could mean a number of things, though it's safe to assume that whatever variation of foil and equal we end up with the character will most certainly be one thing: a love interest.
Here are a couple of characters we'd like to see Cruz play in On Stranger Tides:
1. A VillainThe Pirates franchise could really do with a villainess. We've had Barbossa (who's villainy is subject to whim) and Davey Jones, and the short dude with the white wig - it's time for some female villainy to change the flavour of things a little. The Fountain of Youth is the MacGuffin for this next movie, so it's easy to picture Cruz in the role of an old witch in a younger woman's body similar to the role Michelle Pfieffer played in Stardust.
2. A PirateYeah, obviously. Elizabeth Swann from the original series was NOT a pirate until late in the game, and inevitably they would want to have Penelope Cruz swashbuckling at some point, so rather than repeat that character path and have her go from lady to scallywag, lets have her start off as a scallywag from the get go and take it from there. Zoe Saldana was also a fellow pirate, but kind of didn't get to do very much. Conversely she could be a rival pirate, going after the same goal as Jack Sparrow, but teaming up with him against a common enemy. I'd bet money on this last one actually.

How do you feel about this news? What kind of form would you like to see Cruz's role take?
