Sony Pictures is developing a CG Popeye film that will also be 3D. Popeye will be made by Sony Pictures Animation, with Sony Pictures Imageworks handling the CG. The companies are currently working on The Smurfs, coming to theaters on August 3, 2011. No news on the details of the story yet but apparently it will feature all the main characters; Olive Oyl, Swee'Pea, and that big bully Bluto.

The last time Popeye graced the big screen was in a live action version starring Robin Williams back in 1980. Unfortunately I haven't seen it, judging by this trailer i've really missed something important in my film education.

Popeye was created by Elzie Crisler Segar and first appeared in the daily King Features comic strip Thimble Theatre in 1929. In 1933, Max and Dave Fleischer's Fleischer Studios adapted the Thimble Theatre characters into a series of Popeye the Sailor theatrical cartoon shorts for Paramount Pictures. Just thought i'd give you a quick history lesson.

Check out Popeye's animated debut here, it's pretty classic stuff.

Anyone looking forward to Popeye? Have you seen the Robin Williams one and is it as brilliantly bad as it looks in the trailer?

Popeye is a blight on Robert Altman's career. What the frack was he thinking?  Although, it has kind of a Hook vibe, and I loved Hook, so maybe I should give it another chance.

I remember when I found out Hook was a bad movie, and I was shocked. What I mean to say is, growing up it was just a fun movie, quotable, great music, familiar stars, and then I grew up and read about it and heard about it and discovered it's pretty much side-by-side with 1941 as Spielberg's worst movie, by reputation. I had to be told this. It's still kind of shocking to me.

And Dustin Hoffman as Hook is awesome, I didn't know it was him when I was little and when I found out who it was THAT blew my mind. As did finding out Sharon Stone was in it.

Hook is an outstanding film with a mildly sacrilegious premise for literary purists. Watch it again. Silly as shit? Sure. Fun as hell? Yes.  And VERY well made. The scene where they head up the stairs and see Hook's scratches up the walls ... chilling as a child and an adult.

I had the same reaction as Dnwilliams. When it came out I was too young to catch wind of the bad reviews. I had NO idea it bombed until much later in life. It's a HIGHLY underrated Spielberg flick, like Duel and Always, both flawed but REEKING of talent and worth checking out. Give me Hook over 1941 ANY day.

From now on I'll only make comments fitting for the forum.

P.S.  Olive Oyl has no tits, what a waste for 3D
