Film fans pretty much fall into two categories, people who like Independence Day and people who think it's retarded. From my use of the word retarded you can probably guess which faction I belong to. Well today is a sad day for me and my fellow Independence Day haters as it is rumoured that in the future we can expect not one, but TWO sequels to Independence Day.  The rumour goes that Will Smith has signed a deal with 20th Century Fox to star in two sequels which will be shot back-to-back and will probably be helmed by the original film's director, Roland Emmerich . No word as to whether Jeff Goldblum would also return, but I reckon it is likely he would.

I like Will Smith but he is rarely in films that I respect. His resume is full of mindless crowd-pleasers like Independence Day.I suppose that's the nature of being the worlds highest paid film star though. Don't even get me started on Roland Emmerich. Him and Michael Bay are the reason people are more stupid than they used to be!

Now that's what I call a close encounter.

Good god, I ADORE that movie, in all its silly bullshit-ness. Bring on more, as long as I get more Jeff Goldblum.

You can't get a wider spread of opinion than that.

I don't get how anyone can outright hate it. It's the movie that made Will Smith a star! It's cheesy as hell, it's quotable, the disaster sequences are great, Jeff Goldblum is in it...If you hate Independence Day you must just not like dumb fun at all, ever. That said, I haven't watched it in a long time.

A man of few words.

Jeff Goldblum and an energetic holy-hell-I'm-in-a-movie Will Smith count for something, and the scenes of the ships moving into place does ominous really well. Once it gets down at the end to group prayer and uploading a pc virus to the alien mothership it's completely fallen apart.
