They may not know what it's called yet, but Adam Sandler and Judd Apatow have come together for Apatow's third outing behind the camera - and it'll focus on stand-up comedy.
Sandler's probably looking for a credibility injection. Apatow's riding high as essentially the king of the current style of comedy (though I think, much like Woody Allen and even Kevin Smith, that he won't deviate too much from his formula and will always have fans enough to keep his films viable), and Sandler's crown has slipped, fallen on the floor and been trampled on by the crowds flocking to see Knocked Up. He knows which side his bread is buttered - or has finally learnt that wishy washy crap like Click and 50 First Dates won't cut it anymore.
Sandler says he hasn't done any stand-up for 10 years - my maths puts it closer to 17 - but the pitch sounds good enough. There's plenty of mileage in the dark side of stand-up for Apatow's new, more adult direction, and really he hasn't made a bad film yet. If you still haven't seen The 40 Year Old Virgin, I suggest you get on and watch it. If anything it was a poor choice as his first film, because the title put people off. I'm glad that the world has caught up with him.
The beauty of Apatow is his easy cameraderie with his cast. It leads to fantastic ad-libbing. It's been a while since Sandler did anything off the cuff (even SNL is scripted, often poorly). Who knows if the old dog's wasted comedy muscles can take the weight?
