I'm here in Cannes, well have been for a few days actually. I arrived at the weekend, flying to Nice and then the bus to Cannes, as is the route of most who attend the festival. On getting off the bus I overheard a fellow English speaker point to one of the expensive hotels that line the beachfront and say to her friend "There's ours. See how convenient it is". A 16 euro taxi ride later and those words seemed as though they had been spoken purely to taunt me. I'm staying in a campsite just outside of Cannes, in mobile home as they call it. It's not so bad once you get used to the squirrels constantly galavanting across the paper thin roof when you are trying to sleep, the near unflushable toilet and the eccentric owner who keeps whizzing by my curtainless window in a golf buggy every time I get out the shower.

The weather so far has been wild and erratic, ranging from blistering heat one minute to torrential downpours moments later. It suits the festival though which epitomises the expression 'organised chaos'. It seems strange though that even on the eve of the festival, important structures are still being hammered into place. This is partly due to the fact that only a week ago the shores of Cannes were assaulted by huge waves, the like of which had not been seen here for some time. The waves caused some significant damage and although there is little evidence left now, it certainly hindered preparations and added to the general pandemonium.

Today I collected my badge and am writing this article from the press computer room in the main building and heart of the festival, the Palais de Festival. The badge is essential for entering festival buildings and attending screenings. Even with it you are likely to be searched or scanned by one of the army of security guards that stand solemnly around the perimetre of the Palais. As suspected, due to mine and movie-moron's newbieness to the festival, I was given the lowest form of press accreditation, the yellow badge. Or as I like to call it, the gold badge, it makes me feel more special. It basically means I have a lower priority if a screen is nearly full and that people with better badges point, laugh or just sneer as I walk by them in the street. A blue badge came up to me moments ago and just spat in my face and kicked me in the knee and there was nothing I could do about it. Ok I made that up, but this is the kind of discrimination I face daily.

Tomorrow the festival kicks off with Robin Hood, expect a review as soon as is humanly possible.

lol, didn't you know? Sheridan mentioned it in one of the posts recently.  It's pretty intimidating, the scale of it, especially being here on my billy no mates. Next year we should all come as the movie-moron team, we might get upgraded in badge colour as well.

Haven't spotted any stars yet, I guess they'll turn up tomorrow.

I'd hit any one of these cons/festivals given the opportunity. I enjoyed the LFF and it doesn't even have that great a rep!

Oh great to know no one reads my posts.

Sundance isn't out of the question. Worth a shot. Might be cold though.

Personally I find this sort of diary more entertaining than any review could possibly be.

Waddington - Try and take pictures of the whole experience. If you can't upload as you go then maybe we can do a visual round-up at the end.

I really don't know how I missed that post...
Also, I just realised that's Juliette Binoche...not looking very feminine.

Yeah it's a terrible poster.

I've taken a few photos today including 3 really bad ones of Cate Blanchett, Russell Crowe and Tim Burton. I'll be able to upload as I go from tomorrow, I need to get a USB cable. the Jury Press conference is happening right now, I missed the 30 second period in which they were letting yellow and blue badge press people in. I also missed the Robin Hood press conference after the film's screening(which thankfully I didn't miss) that time it was down to the fact that I got lost, steep learning curve here. The film was pretty good. That's not my whole review, i'll do that this evening.

Caught glimpses of the rest of the jury as they walked into the press conference including Benicio Del toro and Kate Beckinsale, who looked amazing.

Getting press accreditation wasn't too difficult but it did take a while. It was basically just a signed letter with links to recent posts. If any of us wanted to go next year it would be even easier and quicker. Plus now we know that we can get press accreditation it would be possible to book accomodation way in advance. It was a real headache trying to find somewhere decent to stay 2 weeks before the festival started. All the affordable hotels are booked up way in advance which is why I had to stay outside of the centre. Luckily the buses are regular and run late into the night during the festival.

Yeah it's happening in the same building as me now. I saw the press screening this morning. Just watched all the celebs walk up the red carpet along with about 30000 other people.

So you get Cannes and i get a set visit to Forest of the Damned 2! Outrageous!  Wink Seriously though, I'd be well up for a Movie-Moron team assault on Cannes next year, or Sundance, or ComicCon or......

Comic Con will be tough this year, the hotels sell out MONTHS in advance and the prices are through the roof. But next year? Or sundance? We could all chip in and rent a place together.
