There are few on this earth who are true Hollywood legends and Dennis Hopper was one of them. The actor lost his long battle with prostrate cancer on Saturday, passing away surrounded by friends and family.

Hopper has been a huge part of Hollywood since he defined an entire generation by writing, directing and starring in
Easy Rider, a movie that cost $400,000 to make and grossed over $40 million worldwide. It was this film that singlehandedly changed the film industry completely for an entire decade (
Jaws and
Star Wars ended the trend for smaller budget, safer return pictures).
Hopper's early work includes
Rebel Without a Cause,
True Grit and
Cool Hand Luke. He was known on set for being a hotheaded rebel not afraid to refuse roles or challenge directors, famously feuding with director Henry Hathaway on
From Hell to Texas.
His career includes a hugely scattered list of credits, including B-movies like
Planet of Blood and
The Trip, action flicks
Speed and
Waterworld, critically acclaimed turns in
Basquiat and
Hoosiers and probably his best known roles as villains in classics like
Blue Velvet,
River's Edge and
Land of the Dead.
He will be missed.
