Joe Carnahan, director of the new A-Team reboot, is already on the prowl for his next project. Comics fans rejoice - he's considering either Marvel's Taskmaster or Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's magnum opus Preacher.
Sayeth Carnahan:
I love the idea of a guy with photographic reflexes, he can see something and repeat it, I thought that was such a cool idea. I think there's a Moon Knight series where he just beats the shit out of Taskmaster and kind of ruined him, and it's a cool character. I think it might be one of those Marvel characters you really need to reimagine because he's got the whole skull and cape—it's a bit grandiose I think—but it would certainly be a cool thing... I think at least Taskmaster, he's so below the radar. He's even below where Blade was considered a B-tier Marvel character, this guy is even lesser-known. It would be a lot of fun to write it as a series and then see what came from there."
But the real piece of interesting news is his love for the astounding comic series Preacher.
"I'm kind of desperate to do another comic book adaptation... the other thing I'm really keen on or interested in is 'Preacher' because I'm a big Garth Ennis fan and I love that series and that's out there, and that might be something… I really love that. You gotta do the Allfather [D'Aronique] and all that crazy shit and I haven't seen a script and I don't know what it is, but yeah, we'll see. Who knows?"
For those not aware of Preacher or wondering why you should care, it's an absolutely wonderful comic series about preacher Jesse Custer who becomes host to a force known as Genesis, the offspring of an angel and a demon. Genesis is powerful enough to destroy the entire world and Custer wants to know why something like this was ever made, sending him on an epic quest to find God and make him answer, along with his failed assassin ex-girlfriend Tulip and drunken Irish vampire friend Cassidy.
Of course, there are truly epic forces mounted against him, lead by Allfather D'Aronique, an insane man in charge of guarding the last remaining bloodline of Jesus Christ himself (an inbred manchild), the Saint of Killers, an Eastwood charicature on steroids and Arseface, a teenager who failed to blow his head off with a shotgun. If the A-Team trailers are anything to go by, Carnahan is the man to handle this.
Preacher has been in development hell for years now. Mark Steven Johnson tried to bring the story to HBO on TV, before it got turned back into a film helmed by Sam Mendes, who then went on to Bond 23, which is also now dead in the water. This is a step in the right direction for Preacher - lord knows it deserves the big screen treatment, just not a shit one like
Watchmen. One small issue, though - the
only man to play Jesse Custer is Nathan Fillion.
