A Variety journalist, writing on the site’s blog, has reported that Singer is pretty much off
Superman Returns 2. She says -
“It is highly unlikely that Bryan Singer will return to shoot the next Superman movie. The director is finishing up Tom Cruise's Nazi film
Valkyrie, and then prepping
The Mayor of Castro Street.”
Making the franchise wait while he makes TWO other films is basically like asking to be removed from the project. No matter what the weaknesses of
Returns were, Superman is and always will be a cash cow. And if Singer’s holding up the flow of cash for too long, he will get a boot up the arse.
Having said that, it doesn’t quite sound like a done deal. It all depends on how long it’ll take to make
Mayor Of Castro Street. Is it a
Mist-like job that can be shot in a couple of weeks, or some elaborate, lavish production? That we don’t know.
Other sites are reporting the Variety journalist is saying Brandon Routh is off, but she doesn’t say that at all, merely that the next Superman we’ll see on screen will be the one in the
Justice League movie. That we knew.
Finally, she adds that Warner Bros are so pleased with
The Dark Knight that they want Nolan to direct a third Batman. While I don't doubt they want him back, I wouldn’t put much stock in public enthusiasm from studios. I remember hearing a similar thing about
King Kong and how super pleased the studio were with that.
Kong turned out to be ‘just about good enough’.
Would you want Bryan Singer to direct the next Superman?
