Author Topic: Zack Snyder Declares His ‘Superman’ Is ‘Different;’ General Zod Not The Villain  (Read 1570 times)

Even though Zack Snyder still has five months to go before he releases his next movie, Sucker Punch, it seems all anyone wants to talk about is his follow up. That’s bound to happen, though, when you’ll be helming a reboot of Superman written by David Goyer and produced by Christopher Nolan. Since the announcement, Snyder has been taking the Nolan route in talking about the film, speaking in grandiose, unspecific statements. But still, when the director of one of the most anticipated films of the upcoming decade talks about it, you listen and dissect. We’ll do just that after the break and refute at least one “confirmed” fact.

Snyder talked to Empire about about the film and had the following to say about it. Thanks to Comic Book Movie for the heads up.

It’s a different story. I won’t say there’s a break from the canon or anything like that, but there is definitely an approach that makes you go, ‘Okay, that’s a way to get at it.’ David is very respectful of the canon and stuff like that. It has its roots in the canon and again, like I say, it has a point of view about who he is. I’m being cryptic, I know, but it’s the best I can do.

Wait, so does that mean it is or isn’t canon? I’m confused. At least we know what Snyder’s being cryptic about. It’s this mythic breakthrough that Goyer had in how to “address Superman in a modern context,” according to Nolan. Whatever that idea was (Vulture claims to have uncovered it a few months back), it’s what got Nolan excited about getting Superman back on the big screen and his excitement got Warner Brothers back on board.

A few weeks back, Snyder was quoted as saying the film took place during the early years. But when he was asked about that, he seemed to back track.

I think it’s early to say. I don’t know.

Maybe it’s too early to say, Zack, but you know. You most definitely know, give us something!

The Internet has no idea what’s going on.

How dare you, Zack! Oh, wait, you meant that in regards to the “confirmed report” that General Zod is going to be the villain in the film? So he is not going to be in the film? Thank you for the information! We now know something, which just so happens to be less than we knew before.

Here’s what we, the Internet, do know. Snyder is pretty much done with Sucker Punch and as he’s waiting for that film to be released and begin promoting it, he’ll be slowly working on putting together the new Superman. And, as I’m sure his prolific producer advised him, information will be released very slowly and in very small pieces.

To recap what we’ve learned today:

1. This film is different and while it doesn’t break canon, it doesn’t exactly stick with it either.
2. Even though Snyder said it was about the early years, maybe it isn’t.
3. We thought General Zod was in the movie, but now he’s not.

Taking Snyder’s new quotes into consideration, does anyone have any new wild guesses as to what this “different” take on the story is? And why does all this information keep getting refuted? Are Snyder’s quotes being misinterpreted? I want you all to pretend you are in 9th grade biology and dissect!

Superman's always had a lot of slow-mo. Snyder's version will just be slow-mo for 120 mins.

I want Snyder and Greengrass to direct a movie together. Imagine the possibilities.
