It wasn't ground-breaking cinema, but SO MUCH FUN. It was smart about how brainless it was (ala Dumb and Dumber) and offered one of the most unique action sequences I've seen in a LONG time (falling tank). The acting and character chemistry was phenomenal, I was REALLY shocked how much I loved it. But will probably be first to get bumped once I've seen some of the end-of-year flicks

As usual I am still watching dvds from 2009, having barely seen anything in the cinema this year. I was going to go and see Jackass 3D in North London the other day, then I noticed the ticket price - £13.50. I hated that movie Daybreakers! Crapfest!
Kick Ass should make the list. True Grit will prob make the list. Frozen is amazing.

Remove two shots and recast Willem Dafoe and Daybreakers is a perfect film. Great tone and narrative flow, awesome VFX, and a great example of film makers milking every last nuance from a good premise. The opening suicide (sans final shot of digital fire) could be taught in editing class. Sublime film making. The sequence where they drag the vamps into the sunlight is shockingly emotional. And the devolving nature of the virus is one of the best used plot devices I've ever seen, they get SO much mileage out of it! The whole thing is hindered a bit by the early Carpenter mimicry, which explains Dafoe's hammy performance, but within those contraints they worked wonders. Just don't rent their first film, it's like dragging sand paper over your eyeballs.

I had low expectations for Daybreakers but actually ended up liking it a lot. Ethan Hawke is a really underrated actor.
I preferred Kick-ass to Scott Pilgrim. Not sure there's room for both in my top 10.
The Illusionist I would put on the list. It's a French animated film made by the same guy who did Belleville rendezvous.
Blue Valentine will definitely be in my list and also possibly Mike Leigh's Another Year.
and Shutter Island. I love that movie, but I seem to be the only one.
there are still loads of the films mentioned that i haven't seen yet. Winter's Bone, Social Network, Monsters, Tron, Black Swan and True Grit are all definite contenders.

Yeah i'm not sure why I like Kick-ass more. I think the script was sharper and for pure entertainment, I came out of Kick-ass buzzing whereas with Scott Pilgrim I came out comparing it to the comic book, mostly negatively. Dont get me wrong, I really liked Scott Pilgrim, certain aspects were brilliant but i think it slightly got too bogged down with all the visual effects and stuff. I'm not sure that Edgar Wright knows how to do emotion and pathos. I didn't think the characters were as likable as they are in the comic. I don't want to criticise it too much though because it was still better than 90% of the stuff released this year.
Toy Story 3 is a dead cert for my list as well. Looks like it could be a potential winner for the overall list as everyone seemed to like it a lot.
I liked Inception but probably wouldn't put it in my top 10. You know that we will get attacked by a 1000 angry nerds if it doesn't top our list.

Yeah, the Scott Pilgrim movie had to cut so much for time. I didn't realise how dense those books were until I saw the movie and realised compressing it more would have been unbearable. I do have criticisms of it too, but the humour and visuals trump them for me. I did like Kick-Ass, but there's something about Aaron Johnson I find unappealing, and I think Matthew Vaughn is quite overrated as a director...
I really loved Inception, wouldn't class it as a nerdy movie at all though. Ridiculous mass appeal.

nerd probably isn't the right word. All the negative reviews I saw of it had loads of angry responses calling the reviewer a retard etc. There's a lot of nastiness on the internet, it does my head in.

I debated a lot on Kick-Ass ... I love the humor and the first two thirds, but that jet-pack nonsense and Hit Girl beating men up to the song "Bed Reputation" were just so ... easy. I watched those parts going, "come on, the rest of the movie was SO much better than this."
Vaughn is a very over-rated director. Very uneven. Parts of Stardust rival Princess Bride. Other parts make you wince as you watch.
Just re-watched Scott Pilgrim and DAMN. Just on technical mastery alone, Edgar Wright deserves an Oscar for this. Maintaining that tone and kinetic feel while still allowing slower moments so the audience doesn't tire out ... genius. He's at the top of his game. Can't say much about the adaptation as I've only read vol. 1 of the comic, but based off that the movie was SO much greater.

I preferred Kick-Ass to Scott Pilgrim. Pilgrim I admired more than enjoyed, it's just not a genre that appeals to me.
Shutter Island was a great movie with an underwhelming ending.

Frozen is boring. Winter's Bone is engrossing with solid acting and some great scenes.
