Well, co-star. Clooney is set to replace Robert Downey Jr in the Alfonso Cuaron sci-fi drama, in which Angelina Jolie Natalie Portman Sandra Bullock will star as a woman attempting to return to her children on Earth after a series of disasters in orbit.

As loveable as Robert Downey Jr is, this is arguably quite the upgrade. Clooney's recent work has been incredible consistent and often very impressive. Clooney will play the team leader of a space station, the only other disaster survivor alongside Bullock's character

I'm not really sold on Bullock for this movie though...it doesn't help that she's like the sixth choice or something. Here's a pretty awesome (very spoilerish) scene from Children of Men, Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron's last sci-fi outing:

That's the kind of awesome we have to look forward to.

When did Portman ditch this?  Despite her recent accolades and my undying love for her in Speed, Bullock is nowhere near the actress Portman is.  But Clooney has been turning in interesting, nuanced work for some years now (when the mood suits him). Still interested in this project but SO bummed about Portman.

I think it makes sense to go with an actress older than Portman for the role, but there must have been a good 10 actresses better for the role...I'd take literally any of the usual suspects over Bullock, and I don't really have anything against her either. Speed and While You Were Sleeping are fun!

Maybe the character has to get a big black dude back into orbit.
