So a buddy of mine worked on my short film for free. In return, I offered to work on one of his projects for free. He got a gig as D.P. on a "short film" called "Zombie Speed Dating." He sent me the script ... it was in an unformatted Word document. Strike one. Then I read it: strike 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 (I don't know anything about baseball).

Behold, one of the most painful things I've ever seen.

George Romero would be very proud.

Can't say I loved the DP work on this.

Oh yeah, it's bad. They rented him half the equipment he requested and that half did not include any stands on with to put lights. He also had a one man crew, me, who has never done lighting. It's was insane. That five second shot at the beginning with the announcer? Yeah. That took an hour and a half. Because that actor (who was the director) couldn't get his lines right. Insanity.

You mean that one line took him and hour and a half to get right? You could have literally trained a dog to say it in that time.

Yeah, the director fancies himself ... well, a director. There were no storyboards, no shotlist, no plans, they just said "we'll shoot this in five hours." My buddy gave me the "script" and asked how long it would take (since I was an A.D. for 7 years and that's what A.D.s do). I converted his "script" into the proper format to get a feel for length, then looked at content (this version cuts out 40-50% of what we actually filmed) and told my buddy it would be at least 14 hours. It took 17.  But they told the location it would only be 5 hours, even after I warned them.

It's hard to describe what it was like. I've worked on some SKETCHY films in my time, including but not limited to shooting in a hospital in Tijuana where the actors were required to dress in doctor lab coats when they walked to set because we weren't actually allowed to be there. But this was the ONLY shoot where the crew would laugh uproariously at these shitty jokes on every single take and ruin the sound ... and no one cared. Oh, and when we weren't filming, people were teling joke after joke after joke and all laughing like hyenas. Except all the jokes were trite, idiotic, and filthy. And one was painfully racist about Asians and was told right in front of our Asian still photographer.

And Sheridan, yes, we were lit and ready. Took us 40 minutes with two guys to light, frame, ND out all the windows, place background, etc. 90 minutes later we got the shot because the director kept botching the line, breaking into laughter, running off to check zombie make up, etc. It was absolute insanity.

This man has also sold two script to studios. God help us.

Please tell me you're joking mate, he has actually SOLD two scripts?! I can't actually get my head round that, i mean, sure if this was supposed to be a short improv piece but it wasn't, it sounds like everything about it was a shambles.
I just keep thinking that this has to give hope to us all that slave away each and every day for our 'break' that if some who produced something this bad got theirs then surely ours is coming right? right?

Studios actually snatch up LOTS of scripts to either recycle a premise or lock down what another studio might want.  If memory serves he only got a couple grand for them, which for his shit is WAAAAY too much.  But at least he didn't get a half million deal.
