A step too far? A groundbreaking vision? Sod that - how does he hold his head up under the weight of those glasses?
George A Romero has gone all Blair Witch on us with his latest ...of The Dead flick, Diary Of The Dead. Check out the video from his official myspace:
It's refreshing to see an established filmmaker blogging under his own steam, and he seems to be genuinely pleased with what he's made.
However - groundbreaking? 28 Days Later looks just like it and that monster monster Cloverfield trailer was filmed kinda like it... plus there's a chuckle-enducing similarity to Shaun Of The Dead in the newsreel footage that probably does nothing for its scare value.
I'll see it. I love zombie movies and Romero is the daddy. But what, really, is new about this?

Is it me or does it seem like ol' George has just kind of taken the idea of the intro and ending credits from Zak Snyder's Dawn of the Dead and expanded it into a movie?

I'm disappointed he doesn't seem to be doing anything clever with the handheld medium, at least on the evidence of this trailer.
Also read an early review which said the finished film was a real waste of time. We shall see.

What's funny is, some people think that George A. Romero did the whole "racism angle" from Night of the Living Dead and "consumerism angle" from Dawn of the Dead completely by accident... man, it would be so funny if he did. Incidentally, has anyone seen "The Crazies"? Plus, will there be a Day of the Dead remake at some point too?

There was a Day Of The Dead remake made last year. By Steve Miner, the director of Halloween H20 and Lake Placid.
- Straight to dvd.

Starring Ving Rhames.
Sad.
Yeah, considering there was absolutely no social commentary in Land of the Dead, I'm willing to believe he stumbled upon those themes for his first tow zombie flicks.
As aweful as the original Day of the Dead was, it has some nice jabs at our over-dependancy on science. I have a sinking feeling he's a hack and always has been. HAve you ever seen Monkey Shines? I laughed all the way through it.

Social commentary in Land Of The Dead. Dennis Hopper is Rumsfeld/Bush, his cronies the administration. They arm John Leguizamo, who represents Bin Laden, only to have an aggrieved Leguizamo go rogue and turn the weapons against them and try to bring down 'the tower'. When Hopper's asked if he wants to make peace with Leguizamo, who threatens "jihad", he replies "We don't negotiate with terrorists"...
Film is also about Bush administration's attitude to the haves and have nots, the false security of borders and their foreign policy. Yee-haw, military rips through zombie village shooting it up, and then are surprised to find it creates ill feeling and it comes back at them later.

Hey I love the guy. He's got an old school no bullshit sensibility, and actually layers what he's doing, unlike, er, pretty much every populist director these days.
He also used to be a great person to see interviewed (he seems tired of late). I highly recommend 'The American Nightmare', a documentary you can get, among other places, on the region 2 dvd of The Hills Have Eyes. It's the best doc about horror films ever made - haunting and poignant.
