Warner Bros to make Caesar epic

Every so often, the epic comes back into fashion. Its first big cycle was in the 50s when studios wanted a way to combat the rise of television so they made huge films which could only be experienced by leaving your sofa and popping into the nearest picture theatre. A more recent cycle started with the release of ‘Gladiator’ and peaked with ‘Lord of the Rings. That was thanks to advancing digital effects which meant that armies could be populated with CGI people/monsters instead of money-gobbling extras. Now it seems the epic may be back with a vengeance as Warner Bros is set to make a film of Gaius Julius Caesar’s rise as ruler of the Roman Empire. Warner Bros hopes to get a big name star to play the title role and will leave open the possibility of a sequel in which we see Caesar’s fall. Sounds good so far but don’t get your hopes up too soon because the director of the film will be none other than Jonathan Liebesman, the man behind the laughably bad ‘Battle: Los Angeles’

One film doesn’t make a cycle I hear you murmur, well don’t forget we’ve also got the long gestating Angelina Jolie led ‘Cleopatra’ to look forward to.
