Bad.

Bad.

Bad bad bad.

These five words best describe the clip below.

They give us two jump scares in 46 seconds. And they've turned The Thing into a bad CGI crab monster apparently.

*sigh*

Oh dear.

That musical score for the shitty jump - fuck.

It was almost like an MTV spoof.

Fake ass cgi breath. 'E' level dialogue.

And it roars almost like a lion.

And they released this because, presumably, it's one of the best clips in the movie.

Good, I'm not crazy. I'm such a fan of the original I knew I'd have high expectations, but this is just SUCH a lazy clip.

Honestly I feel quite depressed after watching this. A thread of dumbness runs through the whole thing. The way that jump was done was like something out of I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

I can't see it, it says it can't be viewed outside the US. How did you manage to watch it Sheridan?

When MTV shuts us out, someone's usually uploaded it to YouTube. Just search for The Thing, press 'search options' and set it to upload date: 'today' and it's in there somewhere.

I dunno, maybe it's just a bad clip. Thor was a much, much better film than the clips it put out. Same with Paul. Early buzz on The Thing 2011, from people who saw early screenings, is good.

We must have faith.

Thor was a much, much better worse film than the clips it put out.

Actually, as much as I disliked Thor I'd have to agree with this. And those clips from Thor were some of the worse clips out of context.

Just read that part of the tension in this version is that half of the characters don't speak English, thus creating more paranoia when trouble starts. Which is why the Norwegian is acting so strange in the clip and the conversation is so awkward. It's a great idea, I hope it's true. ...And well executed.

This movie. Is going. To suck.

Remember that Thor clip where he was elbowing the guy? Pure comedy.

I do like Thor, that scene was VERY different in the film, thank goodness. I was dismayed when they released it, I thought for a moment it might not be as good as I hoped. I still can't get over you not liking Thor DJaws, you're no fun sometimes  Sad

Er... well... have any of us actually seen Green Lantern? Maybe it knocks it out the park?

...Oh wait, I just heard he liked The Last Airbender too.

As a distraction, I just found this - what The Thing is meant to look like in the ice, according to the short story it's all based on :

Another, much cooler version of the description here :

Green Lantern was as bad as they say. I know I'm on the other side of the fence regarding Thor, but at least it had a theme and some cohesion and was either purposefully or accidentally entertaining all the way through, Green Lantern is the visual medium equivalent of illiterate.  Pictorilliterate?

Have you read the short story Sheridan? It's phenomenal writing.

I haven't read it. Always assumed it would be horribly dated. But maybe I shall now. Is it the story of the Norwegian camp, the American camp or a combination/neither?

No Norwegian camp, that's all the screenwriters. It is very dated in a lot of ways, but the parts that work still work wonderfully, and it's beautifully written, back when genre pulp was written with the same intellect and style as high literature.

Most of the names are the same, but other than the dog-lover Norris, the characters are completely different.

They find the flying saucer and there are multiple "Things" in the ice but when they set off a thermal charge to dislodge one it blows up the entire saucer with all the other bodies (the saucer was made out of an explosive metal or some such 1950s nonsense).

the next section plays out pretty much the same, with a few scenes that made it into the movie only in a different order. It really has the mistrust vibe that Carpenter captured in his movie and the whole "how to test to see if ou're the Thing" scene is there as well. It's good stuff, and just kind of ends obliquely as well. They delve into the whole idea of a single organism getting out and talk about how it can be bacteria and plants, etc, and how the "things" don't even KNOW they've been assimilated ... so basically, if The Thing gets out of the ice and onto mainland and takes over the entire world ... nothing will change. Life goes on as normal and we won't even know it's not us ... weird concept and amazing how it still feels "evil" even though no one is technically harmed. Cool ideas.
