Continuing with the tactic that worked quite well with ‘Thor’, Marvel has again opted for a rather obtuse choice of director for the sequel. Many eyebrows were raised (above thickly spectacled eyes) in the comic book world when it was announced that Kenneth Branagh would helm the original. Sure he can handle Shakespeare they said, but can he handle real literature. Somehow though, despite all odds, it worked.  Branagh managed to give the dialogue a bit of Shakespearean’ gravitas when it could so easily have come across as cheesy.  It was still quite cheesy, but nowhere near as cheddar infused as it could have been.

Stepping into Branagh’s boots for the sequel is Patty Jenkins, director of the critically acclaimed ‘Monster’. Interestingly, it will be the first time a Marvel film has been directed by a woman- which I guess is not really that surprising given the shameful sparsity of female directors in Hollywood, and the film industry as a whole for that matter. I’m such a feminist.

Marvel also announced that the film will be released November 15, 2013 as opposed to the July 26 release date it was originally pencilled in for.

On a minority note, the only superhero movies I think EVER directed by a black guy have been Fantastic Four and FF2: Rise of the Silver Surfer...  Sad

They need to hire Steve McQueenfor something.

Steve McQueen is one of the best British directors around. He's too good for a random Marvel film though.

I'm sure people said that about the director of Memento doing the follow up to Batman & Robin.

I don't think it's McQueen's kind of gig though, he's an arthouse guy.

Looking forward to seeing his next film, 'Shame'. 'Hunger' was brilliant. This poster should be in our hall of fame-
