That’s right. The much loved, comedic sci-fi flick Short Circuit is getting a remake/ re-imagining, thanks to Dimension Films, who optioned the rights in 2009.
The original, directed by John Badham (Saturday Night Fever, War Games) in 1986, saw Number 5, an experimental military robot, become self-aware thanks to a bolt of lightning. A sequel followed in 1988.
Bob Weinstein, studio head of Dimension, said this week, “Dimension has had great success with the Spy Kids family series which grossed over $500 million worldwide. We are looking for Short Circuit to be our next family franchise and are excited to be working with Matt Lieberman and Tim Hill, who has had great international success with Hop and Alvin and the Chipmunks.”
The beauty of Short Circuit, back in the 80s, was the fascination with a digital A.I. future, juxtaposing Johnny 5’s friendly, naïve personality against Cold War mentality. Hopefully a re-imagining will take into consideration our i-pod/ phone/ pad obsessions, without acting as yet another vehicle for CGI gluttony.
The remake is due to shoot this year, with a summer 2013 release planned.
