Courageous in his choices and inspirational in his performances, it is little wonder that Fassbender looks set to take on the role of mythical Irish warrior Cuchulainn.

The German-Irish actor has chosen to return to his Celtic roots, and after his inspired portrayal of IRA volunteer Bobby Sands in Steve McQueen’s Hunger, why wouldn’t he? Following its success, Fassbender opted to team up with McQueen again to shoot Shame, a performance which earned him the award for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and has led to roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as Haywire and most recently A Dangerous Method.

In conjunction with Irish novelist and screenwriter Ronan Bennett, Fassbender is now attempting to chronicle the adventures of a Celtic legend often referred to as “The Irish Achilles”. Set in Northern Ireland around the eighth century, the film will track Cuchulainn a member of the Ulaid tribe, and his fearsome encounters with their rivals the Connachta tribe.

Undoubtedly inspired by the success of productions such as Gladiator, 300 (in which Fassbender appears) and Spartacus, the film, although in the early stages of writing, could well be yet another triumph for Fassbender.
