The RoboCop reboot has its lead! Joel Kinnaman, best known for US TV drama The Killing, has been confirmed to star as the merciless cyborg tasked with cleaning up futuristic and crime-ridden Detroit.

The Swedish actor has enjoyed success in supporting roles in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Safe House in the last year. He has also recently starred in Swedish crime thriller Snabba Cash (from the director of Safe House), with the sequel set for release this year.

Ultra-violent and tongue in cheek, the original RoboCop starred Peter Weller and spawned two sequels and a short-lived (and pretty terrible) TV series. Weller played RoboCop for the first two films, and got out of the franchise just in time as it really lost its way…

It’s exciting to see Robo returning, but don’t expect any of the futuristic commercial snippets that added to the fun of the original (“I’d buy that for a dollar!”). It really was the definitive 80s sci-fi action movie, possibly alongside Total Recall which is ironically also being remade/rebooted and due for release this year.

No word of the plot has been released as of yet, but RoboCop promises to be a slick action-packed production with a slew of sequels surely firm in its sights.

Can Joel Kinnaman, in his first major lead, carry such a potentially big franchise?

Considered pre-Robocop Weller had The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension on his resume, I think he'll do fine.

Yeah, it's not exciting. He does have the red line on his visor which isn't bad. I just wish the body wasn't black, it's so cliched. At least if it was half silver it would be more in keeping.

Also in the remake script there are numerous builds of the Robocop, as opposed to the one build in the first movie. There's a Robocop 1.0, 2.0 etc that he goes through as the story progresses. And at least one of the builds has two 'modes' depending on the situation.

I think the end product will be ok. It's very hard to make a cyborg lead in a high budget movie that doesn't look cool on some level.
