In a movie that has multiple stand-out moments, performances and memorable lines perhaps the real star, is writer Michael Bacall.
Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are recently graduated police officers who have to return to high school posing as students in order to uncover a suspected drugs ring. For Schmidt, it's a revisit of his traumatised past as the loser who is perennially rejected by the girl while for Jenko, it's a revisit to his former glory days as the star high-school jock and bully. Both are in a for a rude awakening as they find high school has completely changed since they last left it 5 years ago where power has shifted from the athletic alpha-males to the environmentally conscious hipsters.
21 Jump Street could have easily been a cookie-cutter comedy that relied on the performances of a post-weight loss Jonah Hill and an excellent supporting cast but instead, Bacall and Hill have put together a story that does not follow the obvious routes - and the film benefits greatly because of it. With multiple meta-references within the film and to the 21 Jump Street franchise itself, the gags flow thick and cliches are gloriously challenged and defied again and again. Bacall is responsible for Movie-Moron favourite Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and later this year, the well-heralded Project X.
The other surprise package of the film is Channing Tatum and the genuine bromantic chemistry he has with Hill. In the same way Mark Wahlberg showed off his comedic chops with Will Ferrell in the ever-quotable The Other Guys, Tatum sheds the shackles of the typical All-American Hero and sappy romantic roles he is permanently linked to and is very enjoyable to watch as he bounces off Hill and other characters in the movie. With the kind of promise shown in this film where he gets to be funny, there is definitely more good work to see from Tatum in the coming years should he choose to pursue this genre more often.
If you don't know too much about the film and the TV series that it follows, my recommendation is to keep that way and if possible, don't watch the trailer! But if there is any chance of a sequel to this film happening, I would definitely jump into the queue at the cinema box-office to buy a ticket.

Believe me, I'm just as surprised at how much I like Channing Tatum now because of 21 Jump Street. He was TERRIBLE in GI Joe - it's almost like he was doing it on purpose for a bet...

Hey, Joseph Gordon-Levitt did GI Joe too.
No reference Sheridan, it's just that anybody who has ever been to school knows there were ugly popular kids and smart popular kids and movies just seem afraid to portray that.
