Was just thinking about this since I forgot to affix a rating to my Iron Man 3 review, and I always did struggle a little with the A to D ratings system. A C sounds okay to me, but when you factor in all the pluses and minuses, it's a bad rating. I'd give Iron Man 3 a 7/10, Iron Man 2 a 5/10, and Iron Man an 8/10. I think of a scale of 1 to 10 like this:

10 - Great
9 - Almost Great
8 - Good
7 - Quite Good
6 - Okay
5 - Disappointing
4 - Bad
3 - Very Bad
2 - Terrible
1 - Beyond Terrible

Based on looking at a 1 to 5 like this:

5 - Great
4 - Good
3 - Okay
2 - Bad
1 - Terrible

So that would make A to D:

A - Great
A- - Almost Great
B+ - Good
B - Quite Good
B- - Okay
C+ - Disappointing
C - Bad
C- - Very Bad
D+ - Terrible
D - Beyond Terrible

Accurate?

The review system on the site is every movie gets an A, then I get cold feet and add a minus on the end.

Seriously though, I think the scale is pretty much as you have it. Ultimately it's instinctive. I always preferred grades myself, ever since the days of reading Entertainment Weekly in a US supermarket in '99.

Note: F is a wildcard reserved only for Dalmatian Jaws:

I can change the Iron Man 3 rating if you want, the only people who will notice are folk who read it twice and there aren't many of those. Your review is much more in keeping with critics than my rant, I'm just mouthing off about what I see as the movie's faults, not at your review which is excellent.

But of course! He's tried to wrangle an A+ in the past too, no? The rapscallion. Not fussed about the IM3 grade as I didn't give it much consideration, but grading along similar lines, I'd give it a B too. Good to know I'm on the right track though.
