The pizza-loving, ass-kicking, wise-crackin’ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are due back at cinemas next year, but this time with an alien origin…
The original 1984 comic books by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird spawned a hugely popular animated series in the late 80s/early 90s – with an endless range of merchandise. This then led to the live-action trilogy of films from 1990-1993; with 2007’s animated TMNT being the turtles’ last big screen outing.
Now the beloved franchise is set for a live-action revamp, with none other than Michael Bay producing. Speaking at 2012 Nickelodeon Upfront, Bay commented: "When you see this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist... These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable." It was confirmed earlier this year that Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles/Wrath Of The Titans) will direct the project.
There you have it. Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo will be back – as pet shops brace themselves for a massive increase in Terrapin sales (and also possibly elderly mentor rats).
How do you feel about the turtles being aliens and not mutated products of the ooze? Sacrilege?!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is (provisionally) due for release on 25th December 2013.
