I can't see it competing with the old version at all. My money is still on the RoboCop remake being better than the original though.

The Robocop remake does have a much, much better chance at this point.

The clips of the new Total Recall that have popped up this week are such a pale comparison to the original. It looks so lifeless, and every edge taken off it.

Compare the energy of this original scene - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V17duGlHEYY

To the new version -

Yeah, it's like they purposefully made it as generic as possible. The kitsch was cool.

And isn't this version set on Earth? If so doesn't that take away all the tension with regards to the lack of breathable atmosphere with the originals Mars set story? so it then just becomes a story about CF finding out who he really is? YAWN

Yes. Removing Mars from the story was a disastrous decision.

They think audiences hate Mars as a location after Mars Needs Moms lost so much money. They took it out the John Carter title etc. Stupid.

I had heard that about movies with 'Mars' in the title but, er, this doesn't have Mars in the title and was kind of the backbone of the whole story. Sometimes the mind literally boggles.

Mars is not in the short story, they added it purely for the Arnie movie. But it was clearly a masterstroke and they should have kept it - the one thing I was looking forward to was how the fx on Mars would look. It's like they've diluted all personality from this version.
